Usually at tire places the "object" on which the tire is mounted is refered to as a "rim" , while a "rim" and tire is refered to as a "wheel" . i've always called them wheels , and it is true; people that aren't into cars as much use the term "rim" , which to me sounds erroneous.

I say "Would you like to observe my new set of wheels I have purchased and mounted to my vehicle?", when Im around my white friends. Then I say "Say dawg come check out my rims!" when Im around my black and or Mesican friends. Wouldnt wanna confuse anyone. Lol....

Hm, I've always referred to them as solid disks or rigid circular rings connected by spokes to a hub, designed to turn around an axle passed through the center. Srsly.

well for all of the good of the people in here, i googled "wheel" and the Bimmers wheels came up. For your info though, do NOT GOOGLE THE WORD RIM IF YOUR AT WORK! lol. just dont do it.
