Personally, I'd probably buy the S4.

s4 has A LOT more aftermarket support. The w8 has... nill. I'd go s4

Well if maintaining them isn't a problem... I'm going to say S4, because I have a soft spot for Avants. a W8 Passat would be bad ass, though.

I've always liked both cars, but I've seen significantly more S4s than Passats. I'd get the W8.

But then again, I've heard some horror stories about fixing the W8. Apparently you have to take the whole front clip off to get at some of the minor things that need regular maintenance. It's been years since I browsed a VW forum but that's the last thing I heard.
