  • Clearing over rust?

I've got a tank for one of my bikes that I want to use, but it's got some surface rust on it. It's bare steel that's been exposed to the air for the last few months without anything on it. Really minor surface rust.

Anyway, I want to clear over it. Anyone done this? I figured a place like Stanceworks might have some knowledge on rusty stuff.

Strip it and paint. Can you physically paint over it? Yes. Is it going to work? No.

Surface rust is not ideal to paint over. You need to strip it and put a mix of hydrogen peroxide with salt added. It will rust on contact ,the drops make the patterns. Then let it sit for a few days(at this time you can wash off the fluffy rust and there will be a layer of rust left)- then you can clear coat over it. I did this for my hood a few years back and it worked great.

I want to do my E30 in rust, can anyone confirm that the above will work? What's the ratio Ie, how much salt to hydrogen peroxide? Should I pour it over the car once I have paint stripped it or would it be better to brush it on to get an even coat? Thanks in advance :-D

Haha why? Its my daily and I love the rusty look. The car needs a paint job badly so I figured why not just strip it and put a few coats of clear on it. mike burroughs Rusty Slammington was a big inspiration..

Rusty, more importantly Mike, have been inspirations to us all.
