R.I.P. Saab

Today, the the tiny, Swedish, traditional enthusiast brand we all knew as Saab, became history. I'm not a Saab-guy by any means, but i think that this should be a sad day for all motor-enthusiasts. Saab was always one of those car-manufacturers who had the balls to do things their own way, regardless of what most other manufacturers was doing.

really dude? those brands were deeply rooted in American automotive history and were pioneers for many new automotive technologies of the day. dumb sub brand couldn't be further than the truth.

I gotta agree. Prior to GM and Ford just rebranding the same car 5 times over, those manufacturers did some great things for the automotive industry in terms of engineering, marketing and style.

But to comment on the original post. It is a sad day. Saab had a great run but they seemed to fall victim to the cookie cutter market that exists today.

It is sad, but there was no room for them in the market. When they were brought back after GM shut them down, they were obscenely overpriced for what they were. For the same price, one would be in BMW, MB, Audi, Lexus, etc. territory. I can not imagine ever paying $47k for a 9-3 and $56k for a decently optioned 9-5.

I remember the last time saab went out of business. Im a big fan of saab, hopefully someone picked them up but it has yet to be released

man, what a Saab story.
definitely owned an 87 900 that got the windows smashed out in my backyard. Also have a few co-workers with newer Saabs. Do parts usually go up when a manufacturer goes out of business? Saab has been known to have some of the cheapest parts around and I know most OEM parts are made by another company, but still.

Saab 9-3 or saab 9-5 is the only models thay made for the last 20 years? And if you look under the hood of an -93 and a -08 its the same engine.

Saab should have died for 5 years ago...

Sure it's sad for all the employes that worked there but they have seen it coming for the last years.

Plenty of people want Saabs. The shame of it was they were priced like Mercedes Benz products, but were of Toyota quality the 2nd time around (the last time with GM... well, GM quality ensued, and were still priced well above what they should have been.)

My mom had an '02 Saab (last year of Saab/GM joint venture, before GM took over 100% in 2003), it's a damn good car, even at 140k miles.

My brother has an 01 9-3 SE and its a pile. But I guess most cars would be falling apart after 160,000 miles.

It is however a nice car. I kinda like Saab's a little so its sad to see them go.
