I have an older friend who is nice enough to let me use his garage. He works on neighbors, family, and friends cars for cash, but I can go there whenever he's there to use his garage space and tools. He has a three car garage attached to his house, all the tools I could ever need, and usually all the beer I can drink. Doesn't charge me a dime. THAT is a true friend.
I would like to say that this gentleman is responsible for letting me to fix my car for the the three years I've owned it. When my parents got divorced and sold the house, my father took all of his tools with him (naturally, who can blame him) when they went their separate ways, so all of the tools I had access to were suddenly gone when I came home. Thanks to my friend with the garage, I can have a warm place with all of the tools I need fix my car, and help him with others on occasion when he needs a hand. I couldn't ask for anyone better to have as a friend. When there is no work to do, it's just a pleasure to have somewhere and someone to drink and bullshit with when there's nothing else going on. He drove VW's, BMW's, and Fieros in his younger years (and fixed them in his gravel driveway, no garage, small selection of tools year round), he knows full well how nice it is to have a garage and proper tools to fix something. BTW - I can still use my old man's tools whenever I want, but I don't always have the gas money to drive to Ohio to use them in the gravel parking lot outside his place.
Sorry for the storybook post, but if it weren't for my friends, my car would be in the salvage yard by now, and I would be taking the bus. Similar to the article, if it weren't for friends, what is it worth?
Here is a picture of some work being done on my car (more specifically, shock replacement), I'm in the trunk securing the nuts on the top of the tower, and he is the guy holding the shock assembly up for me.
This is my own driveway.... not much room for anything. At least it's off-street. Picture is from the porch over the one car garage.

Zack, I thought it was a nice story so I figured I would share one as well.
Growing up my dad was a "do-it yourself" mechanic so we always were tinkering on our own cars and family cars. He always had a summer car (86 T-Bird Turbo sold for a 94 Mustang GT and that sold for an 07 GT) and we also added things here and there and I think that is what sparked my interest in cars.
Fast forward a few years later and we picked up a couple of snowmobiles for winter. My dad had sleds when he was a kid and worked on them then, so naturally we did all our work on the new sleds. We've done pretty much everything to them with the exception of tearing down motors mainly because we don't have tools for it. Working on sleds is what really got me into being a gearhead. Nothing like chillen with the old man, listening to music, and getting high on carb and choke cleaner when your 14. Those are the memories you don't forget.
Fast forward a few more years. I graduated high school and went of to college to because some type of business man. I did ok the first semester and took a turn for the worst when my dad was diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of my 2nd semester. Its tough trying to have fun at school when you know things are beyond shitty back home. Needless to say I wasn't at school much and I burned a lot of fuel so I could be home with my dad. After he went through treatment and was given a clean bill of health, he had a different outlook on life. He basically said to me, if you want to do something, do it, life is too short.
I then did 1 more semester doing business shit to get my grades up and transferred to a school 30 miles from my house. 3 years later I graduated with an Auto Body degree and I'm now a Mechanic. Auto Body was fun in school, but I like being a mechanic a lot more. I bought the Kia for a DD while commuting to school and the rest is history.
Sorry for the long read, but the time spent in this garage has shaped me into who I am today.
Pic when I was doing a little build a few weeks ago. Sorry for the JDM angle:
Right now were in wintermode getting the sleds ready. Mine is on the left. We go above and beyond cleaning and polishing all the aluminum, but we like all the little details. Not to mention we service the carbs, clutches, etc. all ourselves.
Sorry for the shitty pics. Camera battery died when I tried to take these a few minutes ago.

I used to work outside in my driveway when I had a condo...
Used to do bodywork and minor paint on my deck
Homeowners association frowns upon engine swaps in car ports and shakedowns on the private street behind the units.
From there I had bought another house with a lot of land...and did a lot of stuff in the back yard.
yeah, I had to buy a riding mower to cut the damn lawn
Rains a lot here...Soooo, I rented out these huge storage units that could fit 2 cars and room to work. It was really cool place because they let people stay as long as they wanted, provided power for tools, etc, etc.
some of the residents actually ran businesses out of there, built "lofts" and hung out drinking all night on the weekends...or when their wives put them out.
WE used to hang out there pretty deep, I built a lot of stuff there...good times
Recently i forked over the cash to have a house custom built to my specs....
Tagged the Foundation when construction started.
Garage area is a lil over 3 cars. I changed the floor plan and did a tandem garage in place of a bedroom. I had no need for the extra bedrooms.
the garage door leads to a theater room. We hang out in here after "car stuffs"...theres a full bar, Ps3,xbox,etc....the next room over is the home Spa/sauna for when its just girls.
For the summer, I love working outside...I had my driveway extended wider and deeper....and made sure they added a hot water faucet outside. I still have to get the garage fully set up: Air plumbed all over, shelves, tool boxes, etc
This spring I plan to rob a bank or win one of those 5,000,000,000,000 Yahoo email lottos and build another garage in the back of the house.

Same here. Up until a few weeks ago, I used to do my work at a friends shop. However, so-called "friends"LOVE to take advantage and not getting paid (at least $2k) for extra work, I no longer do work for them or on my car. My E36 needs a motor swap... Just sits at my in-laws, until I can find a place or better weather to get it started. Now, I have to pay to get an oil change etc... elsewhere
on a Legacy GT I now have. I've done an entertainment system in my lot, but as soon as I get a jack under the car or otherwise, It's " Hey... what 're are you up to? or the neighborhood itself wants to get into my business.
Oh well, If anyone in the New England region wants to swap labor for space let me know

........
I will never live in a condo again. I still own mine but Ive been renting it out for a while...to an older person who doesnt care to work on their car...or care that the whole building is always up in their biz.
Spend $100+ a month on a public storage place...roll up door and big enough to fit ur car. Just make sure its a privately owned one that doesnt have all the rules that a franchise has to go by.
At first, I was stressed out about adding another monthly payment, but the first time I installed a turbo kit in a day or so made it totally worth it.Last edited by DriftGirl; 12-12-2011, 09:25 AM.*~* Yamaguchi-gumi Syndicate Member #59,005 *~*// Bippu-Car \\

There's a sick place that just got put up for sale or lease like 10 minutes from my house. It used to be a some company's shop but they shut it down. There's like 3 bays and it's pretty damn big inside from what i've seen and there's a ton of space outside too... Me and my friends would go for it if we weren't all in school and broke as shit.///M 2.0G60 POWAR... never forget

This is an awesome thread. The garage at my parents place is waiting to be finished for like ten years now, underfloor heating, four-post car lift (just needs to be assembled), three bays wide but there's still tonnes of space with three cars in it, you could probably fit five cars. All it needs now is get some doors made for it and get the walls and floor painted and it's done. Kills me to see a nice space though when we haven't gotten our one finished up yet
