Help me get started with drifting!

Hey guys, SO basically im just looking for a little advice on where to get started. Obviously I need to get into something rear wheel drive but then that brings up the question of what platform I should start with.

I really like the look of the 240sx, the only problem with that is I cant seem to find one for less then 6k...

Tell me where your story of how you guys got started with drifting!

What car's did you guys got, what tracks you guy's started at, what mods you did to the car first and whatnot.

I have loads of questions so lets get this thread going!

You can't find a 240 for less that 6 grand? What. I was on CL yesterday and found like 10 for less than 3...

I usually look on zilvia so thats my problem.

I actually have found a few for around 3 or so on CL. oops!

To learn how to drift, be sure to buy a car you aren't afraid to absolutely trash, and preferably on on small wheels/tires.
Chances are very big you'll completely destroy your first drift car within no time, and you don't want that to be a perfect 240sx right? Small wheels and tires will really help getting tire costs down.
So buy an E30 or something, weld up the diff, and start practicing in open spaces where you can't hit too much.

Your from Long Island? Once you get a car theres a track up there in Montecello, they hold open drift days...

How does open drifting at a track usually work? You pay a fee and then you just get to drive for the day? Are there different times for differently skilled driver's etc etc

If i remember correctly you go pay and sometimes they have instructors to go out with you, give you tips and what not. Depending on how many people there are you could go about every 10 min or ever 45 min you never know till you get there

Oh well that seems pretty cool actually.

So what other cars would you guys recommend besides 240's and e30's.

Im looking for something in the 1500/2500 dollar range to get started with and I can find to much on craigs.

Heavy and underpowered, but Volvo 240? CHEAP and bulletproof...

Miata, RX7, 240, BMW's, sc300, sc400, corolla... anything rear wheel drive

Anything rear wheel drive as stated. After that its a good idea to get aftermarket suspension (usually coil overs), a limited slip or welded differential, and a seat with some high side bolsters and grip (so your not bouncing back and forth while sliding). I'm just starting to get into it myself, its a fun time!

Try your hand at any and all driving events you can attend. Track days, autox, drifting... whatever you can, because it's all going to improve your driving, and therefore your drifting.

Just get a 240. Everyone that drifts has one but that's because theyre so fun to whip around and theyre expendable. you can get 240s for under a g if you look. sometimes pretty nice ones.
