  • How did you quit smoking?

so i have been a smoker now for quite a while and the time has come i quit. i hear allllll the time from non smokers telling me i need to quit and how to do it. well, i guess it just doesn't mean much because they never smoked. i wanna know how people are quiting without spending a lot of money of patches and gum ect...

so if you have smoked in the past and quit i would appreciate if you post how you did or what helped you quit. thanks!

Tried smoking for about a month. First pack was American Spirits, second pack was marlboro reds. Smoked a newport menthol when I was drunk one night, got sick, and that was the end of my smoking career.

    Yes, it was a career.

for me i also tried smoking cigs for a month or so only being able to finish 1 pack, as i was not a fan at all. still will take drags when im drunk enough, but for me and having to stop smoking mary j multiple times, its always been cold turkey. idk how bad that is for cigs but honestly there's no better way to get your body to fight the need for it. yea i get a bad mood and feel like shit the first week. but soon your body will naturally just cope with it.

i dont think there's anything stronger or more helpful thing then self perseverance. hope that helps some and good luck man. youll never regret!

When I 'quit' last time (I call it quitting, since I went 7 months without a smoke) I just decided that I'd do it. No tricks involved.
If you're determined enough to quit, you'll make it. Sure, it was hard for the first week or so.. I was REALLY grumpy and jumpy.
Just make sure none of your friends who do smoke try to talk you into starting again..

Quitting MJ is actually a LOT easier.

Get the prescription drug Chantix, it blocks something in your brain that triggers your cravings. Been on it since christmas, havent smoked for a week and have yet to have a craving...at all and ive been smoking 6-8 a day for the past 4 years.

It was the money for me. I calculated how much I was spending on cigs and realized I could build a car with it.

                      I did:

I tried to quit because my girlfriend (now wife) wanted me to. But that didn't work. You really have to want to quit. If you're not of the mind set that you want to quit, it'll never work.

                        Smoking is a habitual activity.

Do you have a coffee with each or one smoke a day?

If not, i suggest brewing/buying a coffee to replace the 'time' that you smoke with a drink.

Buy some gum [not nicotine, but normal gum]. It's all about breaking the 'act' and replacing it with something else, so in this case chew a stick of gum vs. having a smoke.

This will help you break the habit. It won't happen overnight, but bit by bit you'll go from say 4 smokes/day down to two.

So breaking the 'habit' is about replacing it with another. A friends GF quit with putting a piece of tape to repllicate the nicotine patch on her arm each morining. Yes. just plain scoth tape/ the nicotine patch didn't work for her and made her sick or some shit like that.

Its the 'simple stuff'. Don't go all out at once with cold turkey but cut down the proportions you use each day until you eliminate it altogether.

*been smoke free for 30 mins.

Jokes, but i've been told this by a few people i just wrote what they we're discussing.

I've always thought that would be a good motivator for car people who wanted to quit smoking.

If you've been doing it for long, it's already been money that you're been tossing away. You could use that to your advantage as a strong motivating factor. Calculate how much money you spent each week with your current habit and while attempting to quit, put the money saved (by quitting or cutting down) aside to be spent on something that brings you joy such as your car or another hobby. Seeing the amount saved and being able to save up for something else that means something to you can become quite a motivating factor and can keep you moving forward when it becomes tough mentally.

My sister stopped cold turkey when she got pregnant. Been smoke free for seven years, after being a habitual smoker for well over a decade.

I also smoked stir sticks with my coffee. I didn't literally light them up, but I puffed on them like a cigarette. You'd be surprised how much of it is a physical addiction to the act, not neccesarily the chemical. Deep breaths are calming by themselves. I'd sit in my office and puff away on a coffee stir stick with my coffee. I'd even flick it like I was ashing it. Laugh if you want, but I've been without a cig for 4 years now.
