    Awesome.

Has much more in common with the E30 than any later M3s, which is neat. M3s have all been cool, but I'm glad BMW has a small RWD coupe to play with again.

I want one. I usually strongly dislike the 1 series, but damn, how I want an M.

I don't see why that's important. It's stupid if BMW's logic is that the bigger the car, the faster it has to be.

The smallest, lightest, most "race inspired" of the group should be batshit insane.

I'm unbelievably let down by BMW this time around. 340hp? Come on. This is an M. Ms used to be known for being bar-none the most powerful cars around.

340hp for a production car Mike?
1 series owners can't even put chains on the right tires.
I'm sure I'll be Flashed to 4-500 within a week for the hardcores.

did you see those seats. ew..

Its all about response, that's what makes a sports car.

It's not a Ferrari and, I doubt they're chasing that, This will just be an upcoming contender for whatever VW, AUDI have in stock.

I too wish it would have more horsepower. E36, E46 and E9x M3 got all more than 100hp more than the most powerful "normal" 3 series. and the 1 series shall have only 34hp more? Come on!

                      This.

I read about the new 1 Series M in Car and Driver and was saddened to see it only has 340 HP. If I am not mistaken the 135i has 300. 40 more isn't going to be that huge of a difference.

Now if it were in the 400+ range, that'd be a different story. So what if it is faster than an M3, anything wearing an M badge should be batshit crazy, this car however just doesn't seem there yet.

                      The Kia has been parted.

Don't get me wrong, it's a solid amount of power. A few years back it'd be ridiculous.

But its just marginally more than it's non-M counterpart. And it's an M car for pete's sake. It should be ridic.

And no way 4-500. Everyone said the same thing about the 335 when they came out... "only a couple months till they're retarded fast." Here we are a few years later and no one is making retarded power with them for cheap.

I would reckon that they did make it less powerful so that the M3 could remain their main sports coupe. Good idea or not, that's my guess.

Exactly what they wanted to do. But that's bullshit. 340hp is fast. but meh.

My question though, is does the 1M use its smaller chassis to outhandle the M3? And how is the driving experience compared to a normal 135? I'm personally not peeved by the modest bump in output because I don't think BMW needed a mini-M3.
If the 1M is improved in other areas as well, I can see the purpose. There are other measures of performance besides horsepower.
