I recently bought a 1974 Mercedes 240D in hopes of daily driving it. It looked like it was in pretty good condition. Well, the clutch bracket broke, so I welded it back up, and now the clutch still isn't working. Plus their are many other problems that need to be addressed before I think this could be a competent daily driver. So, I am probably going to buy another car for a daily driver for the time being.
I have about $2-3gs to spend and I have looked at: e30, e28, 98^ passats, MK2 Jetta/rabbit/golf, Lexus LS400. I really just need something that I can slam and drive daily and I really dislike most hondas and toyotas.
What would you suggest from past experience and knowledge as the most reliable out of these choices, or possibly something I have failed to mention? I know it will be kind of hit or miss and will vary from car to car but I just kind of want to weigh my options, and I feel like if I ask some people who are also somewhat knowledgeable about cars and drive these cars maybe you can point out something I have missed or looked over in deciding what car to buy. Gas mileage isn't a huge deal, although the more fuel efficient the better, also keeping my budget lower the better, as I will have more money for suspension or repairs in the future.
Thanks for you help.
