  • National Saxophone Day

Did you know that today is National Saxophone Day in the US? Well, we didn’t either, until about 15 minutes ago.

First up on today’s little hodge-podge of random pictures is this turbine from the inside of a GM supercharger. Evidently, this turbine and its many vanes managed to become imbalanced during operation, causing it to shake and shudder and basically rip itself apart. As you can tell from both the top of the vanes, as well as the vanes near the edges of the turbine, things went pretty badly. When your supercharger looks something like this, odds are something has gone terribly wrong.

Moving on to slightly happier things, we’ve got a 997 Porsche 911 Carrera in the shop today.

It’s undergoing some basic maintenance at the moment, nothing too crazy. First, it needed new brakes, so we installed those. Then, the water pump needed replacing. That’s the step we’re currently on. We’ve removed the old water pump and set it aside. We’ve also received a new water pump, but of course the gasket for said pump isn’t included, so that’s what we’re currently waiting on so we can get everything bolted back together. Replacing your water pump, if it’s going bad, is rather important regardless of the ambient temperature. If you’re not able to cycle coolant through your motor, well, you’re going to have a bad time.

In other news, if we didn’t tell you already, the 993-swapped vintage 911 is up and running! Aside from a clutch that requires a bit of precision and some spongy thick-sidewalled tires, the car is driving quite nicely at the moment. We still have a few motor gremlins to punch out, but at the same time, we’ve started looking at the one place where nothing is capable of swapping over — the exhaust. We’ve got Craig putting something together at the moment. Despite requiring less overall space than a typical exhaust, the angles are not exactly suited for an easy exhaust creation. That said, we’ve already got a plan that we’re moving forward on, so more should be coming of this real soon.

Finally, we realized that we didn’t include a full-frontal picture of how our own 1.8T Passat looks with the new intercooler. So here’s a shot of that, with a bonus of Zak finishing up some wiring.

Enjoy the rest of your National Saxophone Day, and we’ll be back tomorrow!

I was doing a water pump an a late 996 911 once, got the new pump, installed it. Went to put the belt on, kinda walking the belt on by turning the pulleys by hand, got to the water pump, PUMP, Y U NO TURN!? Turns out we'd been sent a 997 pump by mistake an the impeller was like 2mm bigger, that was a good day.

Gotta love it when you get the wrong parts sent to you by mistake.

Tell the customer, they assume it's your own fault, it's frustrating.

Still can't believe we couldn't order the gasket and the pump from the same place...

That doesn't make any sense. They can sell you a pump, but not the gasket? That's retarded.
