  • Qatari Party - '12 Mercedes CLS63 AMG

Last weekend, OJ took a quick trip to Doha to oversee a couple modifications to a brand spanking new 2012 Mercedes CLS63 AMG.

Now that our Doha outpost is up and running, we had a VVIP (yes, two V’s) customer come through the shop looking for a way to lower his CLS63, along with adding some wheels. There are going to be more mods down the road, but for the first round, he was looking for a drop and wheels. And he wanted it ASAP, as in under a week. So we took to the phones and started ordering. We started with KW’s lowering kit, which would provide springs for the front and a lowering link setup for the rear. After that came the big one — wheels and tires. Tires were easy enough to come across, as Tire Rack can get us a set of Michelins within a day or two — and that’s exactly what they did, sending us a set of Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s. The wheels were the toughest to find, but thanks to Carlos and Miguel over at ADV.1 Wheels, we found ourselves with a nice set of ADV.10 SLs in their most lightweight configuration in CLS fitment. Once all the parts were assembled, we shipped everything off to Doha and then sent OJ packing that way shortly thereafter. Because the office had recently opened out there, OJ and his sister Marisa (our head of international) posed for a picture in the brand new customer lounge. Precious, right?!

With the pleasantries dispensed and the jet lag still running strong (it’s an 8-hour time difference), the VVIP car rolled into the garage. And what a sight — not only is it decked out in Mercedes’ custom designo matte white finish, but it also came equipped with the OEM carbon-ceramic disc brake upgrade. It’s definitely a car that’s ready to take some abuse, and we looked forward to bringing its aesthetic that much closer to perfect.

And so the work began to remove the front springs. Your humble narrator wasn’t there to shoot the work, but thankfully we had somebody in tow who knew how to use the D90.

Here’s a quick shot of the KW springs on the CLS coilover. We’re almost there!

And now, for the big reveal. But first — a picture of two feral cats that was on the camera for some reason. Apparently they have a lot of these in Doha.

Okay, okay. Intermission’s over. Here’s six pictures of the absolutely gorgeous final product. The wheels barely cleared the carbon-ceramic brakes, which is definitely a good thing, but had us suspenseful for a little while prior to fitting them on.

We must give out our thanks once again to every company that helped us out in such a short span of time — KW Automotive, Tire Rack and ADV.1 Wheels! We’ll be looking to you again soon, as our client has a few more ideas for his other cars (and even ones he hasn’t purchased yet)! Thank you once again, and get excited for the summer, it’s going to be big!

Mandatory shop attire: Sandals/flip-flops/slippers and T-shirt. ... OJ was out of dress code.

BTW, that CLS is gorgeous, sandals or not.

When it's in the 90's or higher and there's no air conditioning, heat can quickly overcome a person. Staying cool is important in that climate -- just about everybody wears something similar to what you see there.

Although in Chicago, truth be told, I'd kill for temps in the 90's right now. I **** the cold.

And thanks for the kind words
