  • The Mondays

Sometimes you’ll have everything you need at your disposal to make a case of “The Mondays” go away. Today is one of those Mondays.

Mondays may have you feel like you’re constantly off-balance, and that you need something solid to stand against and keep you righted. That’s definitely the case with the mysterious turbo build, as the metal thing we showed you last week is now bolted to other metal things.

If you’re not off-balanced, occasionally a Monday will have you feeling incomplete, like you’re missing a piece. Eric’s Z4M was feeling much of the same way, but thankfully that’s a notion for the past now. The body shop has finished its work with the clearcoat for the other half of the airbox assembly, and just as we’d hoped, the carbon fiber overlay matches the weave of the plenum, and it provides a nice amount of pop to the engine bay. Very soon now, it’ll be on the dyno and we can determine just what kind of power we can get from this setup.

One of the best ways to reduce the symptoms of a case of the Mondays is to get a little extra pep in your step. Now, we don’t mean anything illegal; even a small cup of coffee can give you a little extra momentum to make it through the day. And adding a little extra pep is exactly what we did for Aqil’s M5. Already running a set of Supersprint headers, a cat delete and a custom rear section, Aqil moved from a MAF-based setup to alpha-n, and picked up some power along the way. An extra 16 horsepower to the flywheel will shuffle him past all the other traffic just that much faster.

    Happy President’s Day!

may i ask, what is that loop on the dyno graph? first time i have seen it. Is it because of the alpha-n setup? Or well it is, but why does it do it?

        It's a dyno burnout.

For reasons such as incredibly high torque values (the SL65) or tires that are nearing bald (this case), the drive wheels can occasionally slip a bit against the dyno rollers. That causes the RPMs (and perceived tractive effort) to both rise, then fall again as the wheel gains traction.

The SL65 dyno graphs took a lot of feathering effort to get right. With the M5, we shrugged and realized that removing the little loops weren't worth wasting more of the customer's gas, time and tire life.

Have you guys tried some heavy weights in the trunk? I've seen a few shops toss a few 100lb barbells in the trunk to help with traction.

We've used weights and additional straps in previous attempts on different cars. Just didn't have any handy for this run

Thanks! Good to know an English degree still gets one some accolades.
