  • Body Movin'

Today, we’re movin’ along on the body work for George’s 318, since he’s coming to pick it up for good on Saturday.

The tune is done. The fabrication is done. The reinstallation of the interior and preparation for roadworthiness is done. All that’s left is the body, followed by the release of some photos and video. But yes, let’s focus on the body work taking place for today, we’ll save the other stuff for later in the week. Last time we checked in on George’s body work, there were four total panels that needed some TLC — the side skirts, the hood and the front bumper. If you checked out the front bumper at any other point, you would have seen the big ol’ crack going down the middle of it. Well, the first step in this body work was to fill in that crack with the heavy duty body filler, and the same goes for the other panels. The hood just needs a buff and a repaint since it’s not plastic and requires a whole hell of a lot of effort to crack.

From there, we began sanding everything smooth. A couple test fits were thrown in, as well, to make sure everything is fitting like it should.

Then began the serious sanding to get everything to the same height for the primer application. At the same time, we started using some of the yellow filler to ensure all the body lines were going to look just as they did when they came out of the shipping box. More sanding ensues as the primer stands by.

After the primer was applied, we spent some time wet sanding the whole application to give the body the consistency it needs for the paint to apply evenly and without issue. Too bad the car isn’t primer grey — it’s quite an attractive color on these pieces.

And now, after a few coats of Alpine White, we have the pre-clearcoated panels drying and getting ready for the clearcoat. Look at the last picture. Do you see a crack in the lower lip? Of course you don’t.

They should be back on the car tomorrow or Friday, so expect a good-bye post and some video to go along with it!
