  • Capping Off The Year

Don’t worry, this isn’t the last post of 2011, we just needed a clever title to fit in with today’s daily dose of Fluid MotorUnion.

Today’s post is going to be a bit shorter than usual, but it doesn’t mean it will be any less cool than the rest. We found ourselves in the midst of wire tucking Mike Burroughs’s S54-swapped E36, and with a bit of the ChristmaHanuKwanzaakah spirit, we figured we would add yet another special touch to an already-awesome engine bay. So, after a bit of work on the CNC, we came out with this:

What you see there is the oil filter cap for Mike Burroughs’s engine bay. Since we wanted to make sure StanceWorks lived on both inside and outside the car, we made him a custom aluminum filter cap with the painted engraving you see there. We’re currently researching the most efficient manufacturing method for these bad boys in blank form, as we might roll out a custom-engraving option with them as well. While we keep working on that from our end, take a look below at the BMW motors this will fit, and start getting excited.

Motors that will work with the FMU Custom Oil Filter Cap:

    -S54
    -M50
    -S50
    -M42

We are also open to developing these custom filter caps for motors not mentioned in the list. We’ll keep you updated on the status of these caps, and in the meantime, if you haven’t made plans for New Year’s Eve yet, you may want to get on that.

Once we figure out an efficient method for production that doesn't leave the cost to the customer at its current level, I'll come calling.

I will send you a cap for a Duratec Ford as soon as I get a shipping address for it. Should I shoot you an email, Andrew?

EDIT: Hang on to it as long as you need, I've got an extra. Hell, keep it if you want.

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right.

We're still getting quotes from manufacturers in order to cut down on manufacturing costs by a lot. Making them here in fabrication takes longer and can't be streamlined like it can at a larger production facility, so we're not ready to sell just yet. But we should get our first prototype soon after the new year, and if it's good, we can enter into a manufacturing agreement and get some of these puppies rolling out into the wild.

If it's a cap that has threads, we won't be able to replicate it, as our CNC mill is only 3-axis, making threads impossible to recreate with our current hardware. That's why we made the filter cap for the S54 -- it has no threads.

                  It's a half-turn cap, so that's a "sort of" on the threads.... I think.
