  • Thursday Randoms

Today’s collection of blog photos are a bit of a random collection. Hence the uniquely unoriginal title.

We’ll start off with a bit more of Scott’s twin-turbo Explorer, as a build of this magnitude deserves all the coverage we can fit into the blog. We’re blazing new trails here (not to make a Trailblazer pun) with a turbo setup that puts the snails in the engine bay. Rear-mounted turbo setups are fraught with all sorts of oil and lag issues. This should cut down on that. We’re also adding a bit of flair to the setup by powdercoating the valve covers Ford Racing Blue, which looks great against the white of the Explorer’s body. Two shots of the valve covers follow this paragraph, along with another quick shot during intercooler piping reassembly. There are quite a few back-pictures to go through on the blog, so there will be plenty of Explorer content in the coming days.

Next, the Mazda 3 that’s been around the shop for a bit is undergoing some brain therapy, and by that we mean some ECU tuning to help drivability, efficiency, and most importantly, power. The trim pieces are being painted right now, hence the lack of a grill, but it should be putting down some decent numbers once everything’s said and done.

Lastly, the RS6’s engine is…wait…what? It’s IN the car? This is ludicrous! Absurd! Nope, it’s just a built motor with some honkin’ turbos attached to it, strapped back into the 1-of-1000 RS6 body. The drivetrain and exhaust systems are fully reinstalled, and all that remains is, well, a lot of hoses and wires. But since we’ve had this bad boy out for more heart transplants than Dick Cheney, we’ve got this down to a science. All that’s left now is time, and then we’ll have some serious horsepower utilizing this chilly September air.

I think we're taking the Cobb route, but I'm not too sure. I can check.
