  • Shave/smooth engine bay seam sealer question

Apologies if this is in the wrong section, please move it if it is.

Im currently in the process of shaving my e30 bay ready for its m50 turbo transplant. Build thread is here

Im pretty much done with the welding now, bit of grinding down to do but not much. Im at the stage i know least about with smoothing and filling etc. I have pretty much zero experience in bodywork.

I was planning to apply seam sealant over all the welds and bad areas, smooth it with a glove and some degreaser, tape the edges to get it smooth etc. Then i was just going to skim everything lightly with filler, then ready for prime? Right?

Some people have told me i should primer before i apply the seam sealant. Can i use the seam sealant like a filler on the flat areas like in the inner chassis legs where the sheet metal is? or will a light skim of filler be okay?

any advice would be very appreciated, thanks

you should use the seam sealer where you have over lapping unwelded sheet metal to prevent the water from going and getting trapped in there.

i did that then used a light filler, then etch primer then filler primer seemed to work for me
