  • Surface rust and roof rack woes

So later today, hopefully, I will be taking off my roof rack and plugging it with the IPD kit. Im doing this
1)Because Im going to have it cut/polished/buffed and the rack will be in the way
2)I've been liking the look of the flat top lately

As you can see I have some surface rust. It does not going all the way through or leak. My question is How can I make sure it stays that way? I would love to eventually have the body taken care and I can see that happening maybe this winter, but that's still a few months away. I've heard mixed home remedies, but want to find a solid answer

so you want to keep the rust from spreading? ive seen spray paint, not sure if colored or clear, but it says in big letters, STOP RUST. you could try that. also, head over to a body shop and ask them if they have anything you can spray over it to prevent it from spreading. body shops usually have it on tap since they deal with rust most of the time.

Were it me, I'd probably sand it back down to bare metal and and an inch beyond the perimeter, then primer, paint, clear (if applicable). If you don't have an HVLP, rattle can would probably be fine, and you can actually get surprisingly good results if you're willing to cut and buff the clear. Bodyshops can sometimes mix up spray cans to match, or if you've got a Wesco nearby, I've had good luck with them. Otherwise, Paintscratch and hope your paint isn't too faded.
