Alright, I'm new to the stanceworks forum, and I'm fairly new to working on old engines.
I've got an 84 318i with the M10 EFI engine. about a month and a half ago, I got in to go do whatever and got about half a block before the fuel pump went out. So, it sat in the drive for 3 weeks or so, waiting fort not to be -1 degrees. I bought a new fuel pump, stuck it in, it works great. So I go to start up the car, and it's out of battery. I run around, get the battery charged and go to start it up again. its starts, and because it's so cold, it runs rough for like, an hour or so and then starts sounding healthier. I let it run until it sounds normal, let it run for half an hour after that, and then I go shut it off and go to bed. The next morning, i tried to start it up again and it just won't start. It cranks over, and like an idiot I just keep dumping' fuel in them cylinders. so i check the plugs, sure enough, they are soaked, black, but i check the spark and they are arcing okay. I decide I'll leave them out and drain the oil, seeing as ow there is probably gas in the oil and it needed changed anyways. So I let it dry out, let all the oil out and refill it with Royal Purple Synthetics. Get in, crank it over, and what do you know, starts right up and idles at about 1000. Yay for me. But after 10 seconds, it dies. So I decide to heck with it, I'm gonna bump start it. I get my brother and his 87 325 to push me down the road, and i put it in first, put my foot down to tell the ECM to cut the fuel flow, and let off the clutch. it sputters, then it start up and i rev it to about 2500 to burn off any fuel still in the cylinders. Sure enough, billows of white smoke, for about a minute and then it burns clear. I noticed that there was an intermittent miss in 1 or 2 of the cylinders, so i let it idle down and why do you know, it doesn't even pause at 1000 where its supposed to idle, it just dies, doesn't sputter, nothing. So we bump start it again, same thing minus the white smoke, this time i rev it a lot higher, more like 4000 for a few seconds, then let it run at 2000 for a minute or two and then let my foot off and it dies again. checking under the car, i see behind the Cat is glowing red. I figure, the cat must be clogged and its just having trouble breathing. so i get out my handy dandy saw and i chop off the Catalytic converter. I go to crank it over again and it starts, but still idles like crap and then it dies again. i tried to crank it over after that and it does the same thing, just cranks and floods and we bumpstart it but same result, still won't idle, its just a heck of a lot louder. So i put it in the garage, I had put NGK Iridium plugs in right before i cut out the cat. and now they are black and somewhat fouled. so right now its on stands in my garage, with no oil or plugs, but I'm wondering if there is another problem with it other than the fact that i did everything in the wrong order and made a lot of screw ups trying to get it running again. Im wondering if maybe its lost compression, because it has new plugs and we crank it over when its not flooded and bam, the plugs are soaked. It doesn't take 5 seconds of cranking to soak the plugs and my Oil smelled like gas when i drained it. Did i lose compression because of all the gas on the cylinder walls or is it something else? any help would be appreciated.
