  • DIY Volkswagen relay 109 (ECU relay repair) MK2, Corrado, TDI, ETC.

This is going to be a DIY on how to repair the infamous VW 109 relay (or any relay with a broken solder joint). This relay gets hot and over time will crack the solder joints. I recommend that you buy a few relays to have as backup as well. I have ordered 2 from ECS, and found 2 good ones at pull a part. but I figured this could help anyone get out of a tight spot at the very least. Here it goes.

    -what you will need:
    *soldering iron
    *solder
*something to take the casing off the back of the relay (flathead or knife works great)

Ok, here is step one. You will clearly be able to tell which joints are cracked or broken. (Mine are already soldered up in this photo, but i marked them clearly.

    Step 2,
pile a little bit of solder on the cracked joint. (be sure to use some good flux or the connection will not be good)
    Step 3,
file the solder down just a little.

    Step 4,
order new relay because this is not a permanent fix

I hope this has helped any of you who are stuck or have "bad relays"
