  • How'd You All Get Started?

Hey, new here but just wondering how everyone got started on this hobby.
I see tons of build threads with amazing work and wanted to know where it began.
Myself, personally, I just bought an Mk1 rabbit and have no mechanical background but members of my family do, and I'm excited as hell to learn from them as well as you guys

This is a very cool place and I'm stoked to get to know everyone

Bought a Vintage BMW with a basic knowledge of cars (doing brakes, oil changes, stuff like that) and got adopted into the local BMW scene and became friends with a vintage shop owner. Now I currently work for him and love every minute of it.

When I was a baby my mom would give me balls to play with but I would use them like cars. When she gave me legos I made cars. One time in second grade I was an hour late for school because on my walk to school I stopped to look at a silver Ferrari 360. For a full hour. It has always only been my mom and I, no one ever introduced me to cars. No thing or experience ever got me started in cars. I was just born a petrol head.

Kfin...I'm new here too and I often wonder the same thing. I only have basic maintenance knowledge too but I think a good number of folks had a relative or close friend show them and the other tinkered until they figured it out. I would love to start my own build, but thats the catch, idk where to start...dedicated forum can help as well as websites like alldatadiy.com, but I dont think anything beats first hand experience.

As far as cars go, I grew up around them. Its been in my blood from day one (and hopefully my future children too). My dad is an old school muscle car guy, so car shows were a regular weekend thing for the two of us. I would never give up my hobby!

As far as stance goes, about 4 years ago I bought a integra. And being the rebel I am I went against the grain of my brand specific forum and found S | W. Then my love for Toyota's kicked in and now I'm here! The people here are very knowledgeable and an all around great group of guys. It really shows you the strength of the automotive hobby!

i always grew up with muscle cars and i still love them today, because my dad it seemed like every weekend somebody would come to talk to him about his ride then before i knew it he traded so i've sat in more back seats of hot rods than your local prostitute. i didn't get into stanced rides until i got my most recent ranger and instead of lifting it like i did my last one i wanted something different and new. so of course i started buying stuff to bag my truck and i just got tired of seeing the exact same style when it came to mini truckers then i saw cole's sdime here on S/W and i just fell in love, and i knew tha'ts what i had to do to my truck to make me happy with it.

Wanted a bike but couldn't get insurance as I was too young and no one would.
So I got a car. After paying someone to install springs on my car, I decided that this is ridiculous, and started to do my own work. Now I have people coming to me to work on their cars.
