  • let's talk tire pressure..

So today as I was dodging pot-holes, I came to think about my tire pressure and how it can play a role in the ride of the car and protection of my wheels!? The tire (205/40/16 falken 912s) calls for a max psi of 50, about where should I keep the tire pressure?

I'm on 205/40/17 912's (8" wide up front an 9" rear) and I run 45 all around. I set the tire pressure when they are cold so that way once they warm up they are right around 50.

As for ride height, I think tire pressure doesn't really affect ride height at all. Obviously if a tire is flat its going to sit lower, but I'm not going to drive on tires with low tire pressure so I have lower ride height.

Hahaha, Andy he was questioning how it affects the ride, not ride height.

Obviously a higher pressure makes the tire more firm, and transmits more road irregularities to the suspension and body, making a rougher ride. With ridiculous stretch though, you've got to keep the pressure up to prevent a bead from unseating.

Guess I had a bit of a reading fart and totally misunderstood what he was saying.

At 45psi, you will wear out the centre of the tread. Because of how a radial tyre inflates, tyre pressures are important to wearing traits. I wouldn't run 45 psi, more like 36psi. But then I suppose most of you guys are running camber which wears them out in half the time anyway. Just my two bob

Camber doesn't accelerate tire wear, toe does.

Also, if a tire is stretched, the sidewall pushes the outer edges of the tire out, requiring higher pressure to even out the wear. It differs with every tire, and so should be experimented with. With some extreme stretch, keeping the bead seated is more important than tire wear.

Ah yes I see, when stretch comes into it I can understand that.

How does running excess camber not increase tire wear? Toe does as well, but camber would do it quicker.

Camber does not increase tire wear, it just lessens the section of the tire in which it is being worn. Toe increases tire wear because instead of the wheel rolling forwards, it is being dragged sideways at the same time it is being rolled forwards.

Yes, but you are wearing one section of the tire alot quicker, rendering the tyre useless once it's worn on one side. Still achieves the same result.

40psi is the way to do it.. not to much to run out the center of the tire and not to little that you could possibly lose the bead.

                            205 40 17 on 8.5, run 40 psi.

Had a crack, but alas: rotas (and I beat the shit out of them). Any other wheel would have fared better. I ran 35, decided to up the pressure to 40, and didn't notice a major difference in comfort.
