e46 fender pull help!

hey guys i'm pretty new to the whole pulling fenders thing, here's the deal, e46 coupe, i'm thinking about pulling my rear fenders to run some poke..my fender lips are shaved not pulled..i've had a few friends tell me i can just stick a phone book or some magazines in between the rear fender and tire and just lower the jack down until i get the desired pull i want? is this normally how its done? i do love my car and i don't want it to look like shit what so ever..i've searched google for about 15 minutes, and now im looking for some professional help.. heres some pics of my car without poke obviously, and the second pic is when my car was lifted.. the car is now lowered about an inch more and sits flush...

I will be doing the phone book pull this weekend for the first time as well, just waiting on heat gun to arrive. I too have an e46. My rears are 9.5" in width with an offset of 20 mm. Haven't been able to go as low as I'd like due to rubbing. I'll let you know how mine goes!
