  • Having a rust problem

Well, I just bought this car two months ago and noticed it is now leaking into the sunroof. I really want to keep the working electric sunroof so I'm not caulking it shut. I'm wondering if anyone has some tips on how to fix this. I'd like to not remove the sunroof from the car as its a ton of work.

Im assuming I first need to file down/ sand off the rust then fill it in with bonding, prime it then paint the area?

Anything im missing? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Fuckin a, it's in a massive track system with gears and stuff under the head liner. I wonder if I can unbolt the sunroof panel from the assembly without removing the motors and tracks.

Of course nothing is that easy.

A new panel would be probably the best option.

        Rust sucks.

        I like em dropped.

It's odd that there is even rust on it. The entire car is rust free except that panel, and it's a Texas car so no salt/snow o.O

From what I've found the panel isn't made anymore :/

              how to repair car rust

Wipe the rust spot and an area about an inch around it with a cloth which has been moistened with white spirits. Scrape away the loose paint. Now rub down the rust area with coarse sand paper until you reach a sound area of paint. After clearing off the dust, apply primer(not rust remover) using a fine paint brush. Overlap beyond the affected area by about a quarter inch. Allow the primer to dry thoroughly. Use an old knife to smooth on a thin layer of cellulose stopper. Try to make a clean job in smoothing over the affected area, without leaving any excess. Use medium grade sand paper to smooth the job down until it is completely flush with the surrounding areas.

                  .
How bad does it leak??? ... would Vynil seats help??? .... :

open the sunroof half-way,,,, get a grinder,,,, see how much metal is left,,,, weld/fiberglass/bond/paint

even when it looks brand new again,,, the rubber weatherstripping around the sunroof will still be bent where the rust was... it will probably still leak

                    Re Having a rust problem

If you have a sunroof on your car, periodically you will want to clean the drains. There are drains on the both sides of the car that allow rain and snow runoff to drain to the outside of the car, instead of ruining your upholstery. If you have a clogged drain the water can do all kinds of damage to the inside of your car. If your sunroof drains are clogged and need repair, you can clean then yourself with a few basic tools, in about 15 minutes.
