  • e36 - bad vibration from rear end

Ive just recently changed the rear discs and pads on my e36 and now, when ever driving at speeds of 40km/ 25mph id hear a a really loud vibration from the rear end, almost like a high speed clunk.
It only gets worse as i gain speed and becomes louder. odd thing is, when i take my foot off the throttle it becomes noisier and completely disappears when i apply pressure on the brakes.

my thoughts are maybe the new pads are gripping on the discs unevenly? or a bearing problem? but then again, im just a plumber

    any ideas

If you hear it at a stop, (0mph) is coming from the engine, or ABS. If its while driving, i think its your ball joint. So check that, and if it is that, its a pretty cheap fix, and could prob diy. (hour job with lift prob, and 50 dollars in parts)

If its not any of those, then its your brakes. Goodluck, shouldnt be to expensive of a fix

Could be your wheel bearings causing a grinding noise. Upper shock mounts can cause a clunking noise if that's what your hearing. If it was the ball joints you would probably feel it in the steering. Did you install new rotors? It's possible that yours are warped.

after getting around to jacking it up again, i pulled the wheel off, looked around to what you guys thought to be the problem. as i was looking, i bumped the rotor and noticed it had a small amount of play. tightened the bolt holding it to the hub along with a small amount of locktight, and now good as gold.
        same with the other side.
either i didnt tighten it enough or it had worked slightly loose after a few kms.

        thanks for the help though!
