Could the monroe air shocks be used in the rear instead of an air spring for lifting/ lowering?

I used it on my Mini as being the only support on the rear to lift and lower. It worked, but I had to run a fair amount of pressure to get to ride height, around 100-120psi. They are rated at 1200lbs a pair, but that is probably in addition to having another means of support, not being the sole suspension.
