Hi all. I'm considering selling my beloved B5 1997 Audi A4 1.8BT Quattro Manual. I've had a ton of fun with the car, but I've been craving a fresh start and am thinking of getting into something a bit newer. This car is far from stock, and has been through quite the journey in its lifetime. Mostly everything I've touched along the way has been replaced. Please see the links below for the VWVortex and Audizine build threads.
VWVortex Thread :: Audizine Thread
PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE AD BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS!
Some background before I get started. I purchased the car from a middle-aged woman who daily drove it for a year or two after her husband bought a new car. Prior to that, it belonged to the husband. The car was in pretty good shape mechanically when I purchased it, and had about 130,000 miles. There were some cosmetic imperfections (scratches and dings), and it needed the big ticket maintenance items (clutch, timing belt, water pump, etc), which were taken care of shortly after purchasing the vehicle.
I have owned the car for a little over two years and it has been nothing but a blast. It is a 1997 Audi A4 1.8t Quattro with a 5-speed manual transmission, with ~160,000 miles on the chassis and head, about 80,000 miles on the transmission, and roughly 10,000 miles on the rebuilt block. It is brilliant black in color, with Gray cloth interior in great shape. It has been a non-smoking vehicle its entire life. The car has a clean title! It is a big-turbo vehicle that is a ton of fun to drive. The car has seen one autocross event in its life (Waterfest 18) before the motor was rebuild, and has never see any other race events or a dyno, but at the current settings I expect anywhere between 300-350awhp with plenty of room to grow. I have receipts for just about everything that I’ve bought and/or installed since owning it. I have had very few issues with the car and it has reliably taken me to Waterfest twice, H2Oi twice, Volksbahn, Staggered twice, DoD twice, and many other shows and events throughout the New England region. The Quattro system is fantastic and the car is an absolute riot to drive in the snow or rain. All-in-all, you’re looking at a pretty reliable, daily driveable, functional, big-turbo’d car that doesn’t need much, is mechanically sound, and is ready to hop in and drive. I would like to add that the wheels and roof racks are not included in the sale, however, I’d be willing to throw them in for the right price. I'm going to start with the bad, then move onto the good, and finish off with a list of mods and pictures. Let's get started.
The bad: The car does have a few cons, most of which are cosmetic. You can’t expect much from a 16-year-old, woman-owned, black car. With that being said, here’s the bad:
-The hood was resprayed and the color is slightly off when looking at it from certain angles.
-There are some small dings and scratches on the doors.
-Rear bumper could use a respray due to spiderweb cracks in the paint. The bumper itself is in good shape but the paint is beat up.
-Front VMaxx coilovers are blown and quite bouncy
-Cruise control did not work when I purchased the vehicle, so the entire system was delete.
-ABS/Brake lights are on due to a missing back-left wheel speed sensor. Had to cut it when changing the wheel bearing and never got around to putting a new one in. I can include a new sensor with the car.
-There is a gap between the S4 bumper and fenders. I think this is because I am using a facelift bumper and pre-facelift fenders, but it doesn't really bother me.
-There is a crack on the S4 front bumper from ripping it off that will need to be repaired.
-Front passenger-side CV boot is melted from running an open downpipe for a while.
-Check-engine light due to "EVAP incorrect flow detected". EVAP has been deleted. You would need to reinstall the EVAP line from the purge valve across the bay into the leak detection pump to get rid of this, however it does not affect the car's ability to run correctly.
The good: There are a lot of pros here. Here are some of the highlights:
-Very clean body/chassis, practically no rust or rot, which is great considering it's a New England car.
-Rebuilt bottom-end and newer turbo.
-New clutch/pressure plate/bearing/flywheel/slave cylinder.
-New upper and lower control arms and ball joints.
-Car fully passed RI state inspection in June, 2013
-Oil changed every 3,000-4,000 miles using ONLY Shell Rotella 5W-40 Full Synthetic and Mann filters
-Coolant recently flushed with brand new OEM VW/Audi G13 Pink/Purple coolant
-New front and rear brakes. Front big-brake kit
-S4 Front Bumper with both grills
-Heat, A/C, and all electronics work perfectly
-Full 3” stainless steel, mandrel bent, catless exhaust from the turbo back with magnaflow muffler and 42DD dual tips.
-Timing belt, tensioners, and water pump replaced at 145k.
-New thermostat, thermostat housing, and O-rings.
-New coolant flange (back of the head), O-rings, and temp sensor.
-PCV and EVAP deleted.
-Upgraded 2.0t coilpacks with ICM delete and new plugs for more reliable and longer-lasting ignition.
-Brand new Bosch 044 in-tank fuel pump.
-New BoostValve MBC.
-Depo facelift e-codes with projector low beams.
-Transmission recently replaced with a lower-mileage unit.
-Valve cover gasket just replaced.
-Brand new OEM Bosch upstream O2 sensor.
