  • Feeler/FS/FT 1985 Mercedes 190e (w201) 16 valve Cosworth Real Eurospec - 2.3 liter

    SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD

I am considering the sale of my 1985 190e euro-spec 2.3L Cosworth 16v. I'm unable to drive this vehicle as much as I had hoped and the house project has gotten in my way financially... I bought this recently and put some work maintenance and other items in to it. I am aware of the value and rareness of the vehicle and am NOT in a rush to sell. My plan was to throw some decent 80's style wheels and enjoy. I will only consider certain trades and probably only an equally valuable Corrado. Please feel free to ask any questions and I will do my best to answer.

Prefer CASH offer (And Local... but will work with someone, especially on an interesting trade)
This is definitely a feeler at this time, but I need to keep options and cash open.
    Thanks.

This is the higher performance version of the 2.3 Cosworth that was introduced to the US (185hp instead of the 167hp in the US with higher redline). This is actually the Japanese market car that shares the same specifications as the european one. There are a lot of "upgrades" that the european/japanese specification has, that the US version did not.
    These include:
    -Factory oil cooler
    -Single piece headlights
    -Vacuum operated headlight dip switches
-Power adjustable front seats with heater
-factory lap timer that still works (very rare)
    -rear sports seats
    -No 3rd brake light
    -Smaller driver's side mirror

Also standard to both the US and EU 190e 2.3l Cosworths, the car has a Getrag dog leg 5 speed transmission (first gear is down and to the left) and was factory equipped with a rear LSD.

The car has a fair amount of mods which include:
-C55 AMG Front brake calipers with cross drilled rotors
-H&R front suspension and KYB shocks (Stock Mercedes self leveling rear suspension). Despite the aggressive lowering, the car has a great ride with plenty of ground clearance. Great cornering capabilities.
-"Personal" branded aftermarket steering wheel and hub (with working horn)
-painted to match rear calipers with cross drilled rotors
-painted front valence and headlight shrouds with flat black front grill, rain channels and window trim
-debadged trunk, smoked clear turn signals, black emblems
-Decently High-end Aftermarket radio, amplifier and rear speakers (no subwoofer)

There are probably a few more options that the European/Japanese spec 190e has over the US versions that I am missing. As many of you know, this was the close competitor to the e30 BMW M3. The 190e 2.3 16v Cosworth is considered a much rarer and incredibly underpriced car today.
Here is some reading material that any buyer should review to appreciate how rare and amazing this car is:

    Exterior: 7.5/10
The car has never been in an accident. The car has no rust. The car was repainted under the care of its previous owner. There are imperfections on some of the panels. The paint is washed and waxed often. The body is in excellent shape, there is one ding on the driver's side door approximately 2 inches long. It is not a gash, the paint is not damaged. It would be a good candidate for paintless dent removal. The impact strip on the front bumper (the black portion) has a little bit of spider-web cracking, I assume someone backed into the previous owner. The plastic is not scratched or gashed, it is very minor. All of the panels fit very well, there are no excess gaps or misaligned panels. All things considered (including the car's age), the body is pretty close to pristine.

The paint in some areas is starting to show small bubbles, almost like goose bumps. Possibly an adhesion problem. It is definitely not rust. I will take pictures for anyone that would like to see it. There are a small number of rock chips on the painted front facia that surrounds the grill, the grill itself should receive another pass of black paint. The grill itself is in excellent shape.

The paint is fairly smooth no fading or swirling and no scratches or blemishes other than what is mentioned above.

The shop that repainted the car failed to add enough "Flex" in the paint before spraying it the hard foam spoiler. The paint is cracked here. The foam is undamaged, but it could use a correct respray

Due to the new radio, the electronic antennae was unhooked and dangled for a bit. This made a small "tweak" at its location. I temporarily removed it and capped with a miscellaneous bolt. Not a major issue

    Interior: 8/10
Interior upholstery is in excellent shape, no rips or tears in the leather. The passenger and rear seats are in excellent condition. The car has seen very very few passengers. The sun roof works without any issues and does not leak to my knowledge (I very rarely use it). The header is not stained or sagging. The driver's seat has normal signs of wear and tear but the bolsters and side supports are in excellent condition for its age. Some trim pieces need to be cleaned or replaced. Nothing that has bothered me to date. The dashboard is cracked from the sun/heat. 3 main cracks. The standard 190e dashboards will fit and are a dime a dozen. The rear-view mirror was cracked, so I removed the mirror portion.

    Mechanical: 9/10
Professionally rebuilt motor 2 years ago and approximately 6,000 miles ago by a classic Mercedes specialty shop. New pistons, rings, timing chain and other misc. parts. With all receipts (in the photos). Recently replaced clutch and serviced transmission by the previous owner (3+ years ago, I do not have the receipts), clutch does not slip and the gearbox does not grind and shifts very smoothly. Motor oil, transmission oil, differential fluid and spark plugs (with the proper non-resistive type). The rebuilt motor was properly broken in and does not burn any oil, does not smoke and does not overheat. The motor does not show any signs of ever being overheated in the past, the car does not burn coolant and the fan and fan clutch work without problems. The car does not leak any oil, the suspension is in excellent shape. The front shocks were replaced with KYB yellow shocks 3+ years ago and are in excellent shape. The rear shocks are still using Mercedes' Self Leveling Suspension (SLS) which is also in excellent shape. You can drive this home even if you live long distance.

    Other considerations:
    - There is no Air Conditioning - the AC was removed by a previous owner. The entire compressor was removed along with the lines and condensor. The AC was removed carefully and was probably considered a performance modification. I do not have the original parts. the heat works without any issues.
    - The ABS light turns on once you start moving. The light will not come on when you first start the car. ABS light is on because the caliper swap did not include the ABS sensors and hardware (typically a magnetic sensor and a large crown/castle ring for the axle). The OEM ABS wiring harness is still in tact and zip tied against the body. Although the ABS dash light is on but the brakes work extremely well. This car will have no problems passing inspection because the light resets when the car is restarted.

The car is garaged typically, and has been driven very rarely. The car performs beautifully and has been incredibly reliable. I have the clean title on hand.

Due to the rareness and a place to start, I'm asking $7,000, or trades

I should add... I've been a lurker for a while, and a long-time member on vwvortex... But a "newcomer" status on my registration here.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Not a "Show Car", but rare and fun.

    Thanks.
