  • 1980 BMW E21 323i TC1 Baur Project - $3000

Welcome to another installment of baby's needs force sale of daddy's rare car.

If you've found this ad, you know what you are looking at. For those that stubled upon it, let me give you a bit of a lesson about this wonky looking relic of the late 70's. BMW didn't always make their own convertibles. They had coachbuiders modify standard production models and have them turned into convertibles. Baur was one of those commisioned by BMW. This particular model was a successful attempt to combine the nimbleness, rigidness of a closed-cockpit coupe, with the open roof excitement of a convertible. They absolutely nailed it. The only sacrifce made was the asthetics. The targa/landau top is pretty awkward looking.

I could ramble on with the history. But, you'd quickly get bored and move onto another listing. If you'd like to learm more, here's a good place to start.

The car has very little rust. The body is relatively straight, the frame is completely straight and does not appear to have been in any major accidents. The interior has been stripped of it's Recaros and now has vinyl E21 comfort seats. The glass is in good condition, it has the targa top and trunk mounting brackets.

The car has a clean California title. The car hasn't been registered since 1998. Someone started an engine swap, but failed to complete it. In the engine bay a M20B27 (Eta) motor is bolted in, but not wired up. The motor is in unknown condition, other than it's complete. There is a M20 transmission from an E30 attached. Luckly, I have a known good, documented mileage M20B23 (from a hartop E21 323i) as well as a 4spd manual (also from the same E21 323i). This brings this Baur back to what is coded in the VIN.

I have service and ownership records dating back to the early 90's as well as a untabbed, unused California plate from when it was last registered.

The car has been plucked of some of it's rarer bits over the years. Fortunately I have a fair amount of parts to replace what's missing.

The car will come with these parts not seen in the photos:

    3.91 diff,
    4spd driveline
various extra Baur-specific seals and trim
An additional intake manifold, fuel lines, fuel distributor and intake manifold from the original M20B23.
As stated before, a complete, known good M20B23 and 4spd manual from an E21 323i.
Several boxes of new parts and probably a bunch of things I'm forgetting to mention.
The car can only be viewed by appointment as it is in storage across town.

This is one of only two TC1 Baurs known to be in Oregon.

This is a great price for a great project. Aside from cash, I'm looking for something a little better suited for baby duty. 318ti, 4 door late model E30, 535is, Tourings, Bavaria. Shoot me your trade, I'll consider it.

    Thanks for looking!

    Bump.

If you are looking for the stance project that is going to put you over the top, this is it. These cars rarely come up for sale, let alone end up in the hands of someone that would go over the top and get stancy with it.

Air this bitch out! Win at stancing. C'mon son, step up your game! I would, but I'm old and tired and have a newborn that sucks up all my money faster than breast milk.

Thanks man. At this rate, I'm going to have to drag it into my garage at home and class it up myself. It'll be pretty damn fun to drive when done.

Up until someone ponies up some cash, I'll be working on the car. I dragging it home to my garage to stat tidying things up. I'm going to rip out the M20B27, and put back in the stock M20B23. Although, I'm going to go through things bolt by bolt as I go.

So, in about 5 years, I should have this thing done up.

Baurs are weird, but very rare to see a 6 cyl one. Giving you a bump for something with a lot of potential.
Beware before i triple dare you like the last kid.
