  • Alternatives to standard coilover spanner wrenches?

So I just recently install my broadway static coilovers on my e36 and after dealing with air ride on my GTI, I forgot how much I **** coilovers :/

I have had to adjust height a few times and finally got everything set but unfortunately, my lower locking collar is pretty beat up. As most of you know, the broadway static coilovers have adjustable shock bodies that have a single locking collar to lock the height. Tighten the collar with the wrench as much as I can by hand and give it a love tap with a hammer.

The last two times I have adjusted height, I have had a lot of trouble loosening the damn collar. In order to break the collar free I had to wack the wrenches with a hammer as well as try using a screw driver against it. Once I realized that I still had the jack under the knuckle (putting pressure on the coilover) the collar came loose pretty easily. Unfortunately, I ended up jacking up a couple of the notches; when I wack the wrench it just destroys the notch on the metal collar and pretty much makes it unuseable since the wrench no longer has a spot to grip. This makes it even more difficult since only one or two notches are accessible and allow for enough leverage to break these things free.

Today, I adjusted the height remember to let the strut hang freely; didn't work. I ended up lifting the knuckle and putting pressure on the strut, and lowering it again. I eventually got it but the threads are even more jacked up. I am considering just getting a dam pipe wrench...it would make things a lot easier.

Am I doing something wrong here? Maybe I am tightening the collar too hard? Had this same problem with my ksports on my GTI and I really wish coilover companies could figure out a better way for securing the locking collars.

I've just put the spanner on, and hit it with a hammer. Not hard of course, but it has never failed. Once you loosen the bottom collar, just turn one of the top rings with your spanner to go up or down. You shouldn't be having that much trouble though, hit us up for some more in depth advice!

I've actually designed a bottom mount that uses allen keys instead of a locking collar but unfortunatly, it isn't cheap so it will raise prices a good bit.

I wonder whats wrong then because this has caused me trouble on multiple sets. When loosening/tightening the lower collar, is it best to have the suspension hanging from the top (so weight is pulling on the strut? Sometimes I do it with a jack underneath the components to relieve some of the tension.
