  • E36 rear shock mounting bolt strength?

I'm really struggling to get my rear stance to look right.
    I have a 97' E36 coupe, on 215/45/17 10j with around 8* camber.
The arches are rolled and flared with the inner arch cut and lifted up a few inches for clearance.
My major issue is that I cannot get the tire/lip to sit close to the arch without it touching.
My thoughts are add some bumpstops into the shocker, however is the bottom mounting bolt going to be strong enough to handle this?
Before anyone suggests it £2k coilovers from broadway static are not an option at all.
I'm currently on 400lbs springs and spax rsx shocks.
It sits like this now and id like to add a 10mm spacer (or reduce camber) to get the tire closer to the arch and looking better.

    Thanks guys.

your rear springs are too soft.

I don't see the bolt strength being an issue since, by nature, the bolt is expected to handle any extra stress put on it when the "spring" rate increases if the shock hits the bump stops.

Indeed, I'm sure many people have cars with improper shock/spring combos where the shock/strut "rides" on the bump stops and I've heard no reports of bolts failing.

For real close clearance something around 600 would be good

Saying that, if you get your angles and tyres right you can get the travel with tight clearances and not rub

To answer your question, yes the bolt will be strong enough. One mre point to make is that if your shock isn't valved for a stiffer spring, it will future harshen the ride when combined with the bump stop trick. With those soft springs you will ride the new bumpstops and if you just stick a stiff spring in there, you will bounce and hit the BS even harder. You don't need BWS coils but you do need to re valve your rears for a new spring if you want a decent set up.

the bumpstop will solve the problem of hitting the fender, but create more. I was able to lengthen my shock (similar effect to adding bumpstop) to keep from hitting fender and it definitely gave a rough ride in rear. also, I don't know how hard you drive, but hitting bumpstop mid corner sucks.

my thought is add the bumpstop to get the poke you want, but plan on getting better coils when you can.

like others have said, the bolt is plenty strong

                  Excellent replies guys
                  Thanks for all the info.
Because we have flared the rear arches so far they are at a silly angle so even with 8* of camber I still hit them.
What rear shock spring setups are avaliable for this then?
Obvioulsy I can just buy a X00lb spring from motorsport places but still dont really understand shock rates in comparison.
How much would a pair of rear shock/springs combo be from Broadway?
                  Thanks again
