  • Fabricating coilovers

Disclaimer: I'm a photographer, not a mechanic. I don't know exactly how cars work.

Is it possible to make coilovers from a civic (like a good brand of coilover) fit on my car with some fabrication? i know "anything is possible if you fab" but will it be easy? how would it be done? i need a decent, cheap coilover for my 2002 Saturn SC2, and they just dont make them. id rather go with a company ive heard of thats legit and reliable. this car obviously isnt getting tracked, so i dont need anything too fancy. im looking to get low in the summer, and high over the snow in the winter. not looking to really stance it either, im just going to pull the fender wells out and tuck tire.

Buy short koni yellows for your car. Buy swift or eibach springs in the length, diamter, and rate you want. Buy coilover sleeves and adjusters. Buy mounts or use the stock ones. Now you have a high quality bolt in coilover.

I did a quick 5-minute Google and S|W search and found the following info:

Summit Racing interchange states your SC suspension design is shared with the LS, LW, SL, and SW Saturns. That being said, there's almost a guarantee someone's got something out there for an SC1, they were very popular budget SCCA racers back in the '90s and '00s. Summit Racing also has their own brand of tubular lower control arms - not sure if they lower the vehicle any, but at $40 each, can't really hurt to give them a shot. Worst case you get shiny new stuff under the car that comes with new bushings and ball joints.

Second, user "randommodification" here on S|W has a build thread here: http://www.stanceworks.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=26511

... in which he uses KW V1 coilovers for a '97 Neon and generic 2.5" ID Japan2000 springs on his '99 SL2. He's pretty fucking low. For the record, the suspension design for all Neons, including the SRT4, is the same for the entire run of the build ['95-'07?]. Coilovers are readily available for Neons, SRT4s, and the like.

Now, he doesn't go into great detail [or any, really] about what, if anything, he had to modify on the KW's to bolt up to the Saturn knuckles. Hell I'm not even sure the rear suspension of a Saturn is the same design as the Neon [multi-link rear w/ McPherson strut]. Looking through a few of his pics though, it appears as though the mount on the knuckle where the strut bolts to is about perfect size to bolt the Neon stuff on with no hassle. At worst I'd imagine for the front you'd have to drill out one of the mount holes, which isn't a big deal at all. The only issue I could see you running into after that is the strut top-mount, but those are very easily fabricated, and one from a Neon can be used in your strut tower with little to no modifications, space permitting. Again, I don't know what randommodification did for his Saturn, you may just have to ask him.

Hell I'd offer to build you a set of rebuildable coilovers using Koni inserts, specifically for your application, but they'd be in the $1000 range if not slightly higher, and turn-around time for completion would be in the 3-4 month range, as I don't have the tooling readily available, a vehicle to mock them up on, or the time to mess with them. Maybe in the future though, should more people express an interest in them.

But, there you go. A little research goes a long way.

Interesting. Never saw those in my search. Looks like some decent quality stuff.

neon coilovers work. for the fronts you just shave a bit of the stock Saturn upper strut mount. the rears you just have to enlarge the holes that bolt to the knuckle. some sunfire stuff might work as well, never checked tho, just know its a similar platform.

civic coilovers I don't think will work, no offense. they bolt up completely different if I remember correctly.

somebody on sixthsphere was trying to get subaru coilover measurements to see if they would work, might be worth a try. don't know enough about subie's to comment tho.

                hope that helps! good luck

also AMR's are (from what i've heard) the best you can get and agility is pretty good.

                  this may help also http://www.sixthsphere.com/forum/sho...Springs-for-Me
mostly springs tho, I think they might have some coilover stats as well

Idk how you found them so quick, but thanks. The only thing is, theres a guy i work with on base that said him and his dad build air ride for cars, custom work. I'm going to go check them out and get an estimate, i figured it cant hurt. and if its cheaper than $1600 and it's actually a legit setup, then i might just bag it. thanks for your help guys! i appreciate all of it
