  • Bag over Coil woes

    Hey all,

I finished my bag over coil setup this past weekend, and so far I'm really disappointed. The ride is awful, my entire car sounds like it's about to explode when driving, and sounds like it's falling apart when I air down. I'm just not sure what's wrong.

I've disassembled the coilovers completely, and reassembled them again to ensure that nothing was loose and it didn't help. I'm not sure what's up.

I've had an alignment and made sure everything was in spec. I know my cambers a little off, but they refused to fix it.

I've double checked all my bolts and everything is tight to my knowledge.

I'm running air house 2 over bc coilovers in the rear, and aero sports in the front. I'll attach a picture below to see if anything looks out of the ordinary.

I'm getting clunks, creaks, when I make sharp turns it feels like the entire car doesn't have suspension and gets tossed around. And whenever I hit bumps it feels like I'm on a trampoline jumping around.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This was my first bag install and am almost regretting it 100%.

Here's 3 of the 4. I'm not sure where the 4th was in the picture. Before install I reseated the bags so they sat flush against the bottom rings, rather than sitting like pictured.

When it's installed do the top hats sit flush with the top of the bag?

Bounciness is almost always a lack of damping. If you can get me the corner weights for your Jeep, the front and rear suspension motion ratios, and how tall your bags are at ride height, I can run your setup against my air bag spring rate model and you can compare to the rates that your coilovers were designed for.

For the rears no, it takes a good 40 psi for them to meet the top hat without the weight of the car on them. Do I need to crank the bags up further?

The tops sit rear nice, and I don't think the sounds are being caused by the front. I really need to figure out why the rear is making all these sounds.

So if I mess with the dampening the bouncing should minimize? I'll have to grab the measurements for you hopefully tomorrow and we can see what it says.

I'd start ratcheting up the damping and seeing how it performs. Bags are highly progressive - the spring rate goes up geometrically with compression - so it's not hard for a good bump to compress them to the point where a shock absorber no longer can adequately control them.

I'll play with it today and see how it goes. Unfortunately I have to drop the rear coilovers to adjust them... what a pain.
