  • Big bang on impact!

I just installed a bag over coilover setup on my clk55. I have universal air bags on Megan coilovers. It rides pretty smooth until i hit a bump or uneven road like when asphalt meets the cement/brick crosswalk, or an uneven manhole cover. When i do run over one of these, there is huge thud/bang like there are no springs or shocks to absorb the hit. It seems as though the car itself absorbs it. Its pretty loud and sounds like something is bound to break.
Any ideas what it could be or how i could fix this??

I've already messed with the firmness settings on the co's.

    Thanks

In my camaro, if I didn't have a lot of air in the rear bags it would make a loud clunk from the axle hitting the bump stops.

Not sure if your car is set up the same though.

Your coils are maxing out one way or another. If you continue to drive around like that they dampers will fail prematurely. You will need to adjust the height of the bag on your coilover so you have full range of motion when driving at your ride height.

Mine has a bit of that in the front. If I banzai over a speedbump, the tire actually clunks against the inner fender at the top. Makes a pretty good noise, but the suspension still has plenty of range. Basically, I need to just get off my ass and put my trimmed bumpstops in. If you read my build thread, however, you'll know this is not the first banging noise I had with my setup - I actually had a bag getting caught on bodywork on bumps. Luckily I caught it before it did any serious damage.

What I would do is raise the car, pull off a wheel, air down on that corner to zero pressure, and then raise the hub all the way until the suspension stops at the upper limit of travel. It should be easy from there to see what component has run out of range first.
