Sanding wheels

I've sanded wheels by hand and am wondering if there is a better way. Has anyone used a disc sander or an orbital sander to sand down their wheels? If so, how was the result and would you recommend it?

I'm planning on just sanding and polishing the lips of my wheels not the faces.
