When converting LMs to 3 piece, do the lip and barrel need to be welded (making it a 2 piece wheel)?
One local shop says to use regular bolts and weld the lip and barrel, while another local shop says no welding required but stronger bolts needed.

I do not want to machine the flange of the face or enlarge the bolt holes...I have seen the blackforrest 3 piece kit to sandwich mount, but I want the face front mounted to get maximum lip.

Anyone out there with 3 piece LMs?

Frount mount will show less outer lip that sanwich or rear mount.

Up until you hit the fender.
Using the fender line as the limit, working backwards, you can use a larger lip front mount vs sandwich mount. Maybe not all of it will be clearly visible, and the difference is maybe less than half inch, but it will allow for more lip (the thickness of the flange on the face to be exact).

I know converting these LMs aren't that rare, but its just oddball sizing and bolt numbers and I haven't seen a good detailed write up of the process like the many RS ones out there.

Not everything in life will have a detailed write up. Do some more research, it's obvious you haven't done enough. As you said, this is "not that rare".

So for a 3pc conversion you do need to either get all new parts (inners and outters) or you can split the 2pc barrel and get new lips machined to fit. May work out may not.
