So I have read a lot of different options online about coating mating surfaces and leaving them bare. I have assembled my wheels every winter now for like 4 years always switching them up and always had the mating surfaces bare. Now I just ordered all new parts for my wheels from VR wheels and had them do some powder coat on the barrels and they coated the entire barrel including mating surfaces. Is it going to be okay. I'll make sure there no boogers on the surface really sticking up or course. Wheels are OZ Futura just for reference.

Honestly it depends on the thickness of the powder and how evenly they sprayed it.
A properly powdercoated part like a barrel will usually have a pretty consistent layer of powder on it. As long as the face doesn't seem too tight on the barrel, it should be fine.@sd262 - instagram

Just called VR and they said they usually sand them down to bare metal and they don't know why I got them like that. Those guys suck! Never ordering from them again. All four lips need a repolish because the finish sucks and you can see where the polisher head hit the lip and marred them up. The powder is translucent in one section where I can see the sharpy they wrote the barrel dimensions on. They never send a great finish, always super sub-par. The only time I didn't mask the barrels up myself bewteen blast and powder and asked the powder shop to do so, they didn't. What an abolsute pain in the butt sanding/filing the powder off. I personally prefer a bare mating surface on lips/barrels/faces as it just feels better knowing it'll all be even. Plus, the faces wouldn't fit in the barrel with the powder as it was just a bit too thick.

Ended up sanding down the top mating surface just for the peace of mind. Took about an hour to do all four. Ended up having to polish all four lips from 800 grit as well. I won't be using VR again, and I highly recommend anyone else to take your business elsewhere.
