  • Help with three piece OZ assembly!

    Hey guys,

So I'm refinishing my OZ Mitos on my E36 and I'm stuck on the second wheel. So I've bought brand new 3 inch lips and I've had the center pieces powder coated.

So here's the problem, as I'm trying to place the center on the lip the center will not sit flush on the outer lip. This causes a problem, where the bolts will not go all the way through the face and therefore I can not bolt the wheels back together. I'm thinking the powder coats didn't tape off the inside of the center pieces and added so much extra material that it's making for an extremely tight fit.

But here's the thing, I've managed to put one wheel together and seal up successfully, but I had to tight the bolts one by one to force fit the pieces together slowly until it was flush. Most likely not a smart idea.

Hopefully that makes sense and someone can hopefully chime in.

    Thanks guys!

    -Josh

Did they powdercoat the outer edge of the centres where the bolts go through? Even an added mm will fuck you with clearance here...

sounds like the painters had no idea what a multi-piece wheel was and how they fit together. you really shouldnever paint those surfaces

Yep, they definitely didn't listen when I told them they were a three piece and not to paint over the contact surfaces. My fault, I should of checked before I left the powder coaters. Well, anyways I sanded down the surface area and they fit perfect now.

But, my fucking OZ tool snapped, so I can't finish these until I get a replacement in.

            I appreciate the help guys!

              No problemo.
But how come the tool snapped?
Do NOT over tighten the bolts, because when your gonna roll down the street, the bolts will just snap.
              Torque them to the specs.

See that's the thing I was torquing them to OZ specs, I'm completely pissed and confused at the same time, as I can't figure out how it would break. Oh well, I have a replacement already in the mail.

If you reused the old bolts they'll have lower torque specs. Trust me, i've snapped three bolts after I got the correct torque setting. Try to start with 12 ft lbs...
