  • Futura Center Rework - Ehrlich wheels? Other Options?

I've been trying to get in contact with Paul at Ehrlich Wheels, but got a very slow response initially, and have been waiting even longer after I sent a detailed list of what I needed done. Is it normal for people that have worked with the him? I understand he just may be very busy, but I'm just trying to figure out if there's a better way to talk to him rather than email.

I would go somewhere else, but I know his quality of work is awesome and I can't find anyone else who would be able to do the work I need to get done (unless someone can suggest a place). I was under the impression that the machining work after welding would be beyond SpinFab's abilities?

    Any suggestions?

Here's the first message I sent him:

I've got a set of 17" Futura centers I want to get refinished/corrected this winter. They are currently powdered Audi Quartz Grey, but I want them to be polished with a clear coat. I was hoping we could discuss finish and plating options. The other thing to note is that they were redrilled, but the old PCD was filled with poured aluminum and it didn't take like welding would because it didn't penetrate the surface. I was hoping that could get fixed while they were in your shop. Lastly there's a crack on the CB of one of them that I want to get fixed ASAP before it gets worse. Let me know what you think. I can email you back pictures after you respond. Thanks, Brian.
And this is the list of what I need done that I sent him (with pictures):

    All Wheels:
    - CNC machine cavity and back pad after welding (like what you've done on RS re-drills)
    - Polish faces, windows, front of center caps (you can leave backside of faces and backside of center caps un-polished)
    - Gloss black letters and lines on center caps (like what is in there now)
    - Clear coat faces, but mask back pad, center bore, and the entire barrel-lip mounting flange

    Wheel 1:
    - Fix/Weld crack in centerbore and sand/machine smooth
    - Punch out poured aluminum
    - Re-weld OE PCD
    - Weld original center cap threaded holes (overlapping 5x112 PCD) and threaded insert hole, re-drill/tap hole that threaded insert came out of

    Wheel 2:
    - Re-weld OE PCD

    Wheel 3:
    - Punch out poured aluminum
    - Re-weld OE PCD
    - Weld original center cap threaded holes (overlapping 5x112 PCD) and threaded insert hole, re-drill/tap hole that threaded insert came out of

    Wheel 4:
    - Punch out poured aluminum
    - Re-weld OE PCD
    - Weld original center cap threaded holes (overlapping 5x112 PCD)

those things look like a mess, but since you referred to one of the companies i founded in the message, this stuff is done all the time and certainly not above any abilities. have 3 sets of futuras currently being machined, center bore adjusted to 57.1 and plugged/welded to 5x100 in the shop line right now in fact. one of which i believe just was mirror polished too

might as well send over an email, and with that your budget up front as there is a list of work there which all comes at a cost.

If those are 17" 35 bolt faces, you might also benefit from selling those as is to someone willing to work with them and purchasing a new set of faces as they look like a mess from the photos and might not be worth the cost of salvaging. Your best bet would be to have an original set of faces plugged, welded, centerbore adjustment and machined over the old holes so it doesnt look like swiss cheese under the center caps.
