  • Style 5s RC090 17x8 Squeaking noise problem

One of my style 5 RC090 17x8 wheel just started to squeak recently. It squeaks with every rotation right when the valve stem area hits the ground. I took it to my local wheel shop and they checked eat rim bolt and torqued them down again. No bolts are broken or snapped, and they are all fairly new. The rim was rebuilt professionally at this shop last year. They rebalanced it. The wheel spins fine, no bends or wobbles visible by eye when it was spinning on the balancer. While driving, I don't notice any weird vibrations that would indicate an unbalanced wheel. It's a very smooth ride as always, but if I roll down my windows, I can hear the squeaking quite clearly, as it is very noticeable, especially at higher speeds. And it was perfect the day before. Didn't hit any potholes or major bumps either.

Are style 5s two-piece prone to squeaking? Or are two-piece rims prone to squeaking in general?

Lol. This is not a sales thread. I'm asking for help with the squeaking problem I'm having with my wheels. Sorry

Are you sure is the wheel squeaking? I never heard of a wheel squeaking before. Did you try with a different wheel mounted to see if the sound it's still there?

Yeah, the rim itself is squeaking. Not sure if squeaking is the right term, maybe creaking, like when you are stepping on wooden floor and there is that slight creaking noise of the wood. It's the closest sound I can relate it to. I have moved the wheel from back to front and the sound moved with the suspect wheel. Creaking sound no longer in the rear, but in the front.

Also the sound always occurs right when the valve stem area touches the ground. It's consistent in that nature. Tire is brand new, no nails or anything stuck to the treads.

Here's a youtube video of me trying to capture the sound, though the crappy iphone mic doesn't pick it up too well. You can barely hear it if you crank up the volume. But in person, it's very noticeable.

Are you sure its the rim? Sounds to me like something may be rubbing on the opposite side of the valve stem making you think the rim is squeaking from the valve area. Hard to tell from the video. Hope you get this sorted out, that would drive me crazy.

I double checked the rim and wheel well. Nothing is rubbing inside, considering I moved the wheel from the rear to the front, the front wheel well has even more clearance. And the sound is not a rubbing noise for sure. It's definitely sounds like the rim is making the noise. I have another style 5 wheel that has the exact same problem. It's such a weird problem and it's driving me nuts lol. All the rim bolts are tight and torqued correctly. Boggles the mind.

Did you torqued the bolts in a star pattern?

                Maybe the center is clamped...

                  Thinking this too...

If the face went in crooked, the finish was too thick, or something got caught between the face and barrel, it would be possible to torque the bolts to spec but not fully seat the face against the barrel. To make noise, there needs to be movement somewhere.

What do you mean by clamped?

I been driving on this wheel for approximately 2 years now and it only started creaking just recently. When the shop rebuilt the rim, the face was seated completely and bolts torqued in star-pattern. When they powdercoated the rims, they masked off the areas that mated together, so there was no paint in the area where the center mounts to the barrel.

If the face was crooked when rebuilt, wouldn't I have had the sound since the very beginning?

Sounds like a crack to me. You should take the tire off and start looking for damage. My guess is that after 2 years, it probably has nothing to do with the rebuild. Damage happens.

I'd loosen all the nuts, center out, clean surface, center back in,
torque bolts by hand(in star-pattern), torque bolts to spec(in star-pattern).

I tried searching for torque specs but get varying answers. What is the correct torque specs for the RC090?

UPDATE: I took the faces apart, re-seated them and re-torqued the bolts to proper spec and it's still squeaking. I made sure the mating surfaces are clean and free of debris. There are no cracks or defects in the face or the barrel pieces. Wheel is spun on balancer and balances just fine. Drives fine without vibrations, but it still squeaks in the same area. Damn, it's so annoying. Looks like I have to buy new rims...
