  • Your Thoughts on DIY Curb Rash Repair

I bought a set of stock cast/alloy wheels for my wife's Mini Cooper that has a lot of curb rash. These wheels aren't worth paying hundreds of dollars to get fixed. I was thinking of attempting to fix them myself after seeing DIY wheel repair Youtube videos, but I want to get your thoughts. The videos (strangely many are from England) have the following instructions:
    1. Clean/degrease
    2. Sand down curb rash
    3. Fill with body filler or metal filler
    4. Sand down filler
    5. Paint

My question is how well will the fillers will stand up over time, especially during tire installations? Wouldn't filler just break off during tire installation? Is this too good to be true?

I know Canadian tire sells something called metal epoxy, it's supposed to harden and essentially become almost as hard and strong as steel. It may be a better replacement for the filler, but you may end up having to use pinhole filler with it anyhow. I don't think straight bodyfier would be very suitable for repairing the lips of wheels

Never use body filler it's not a permanent fix and will come off when anyone mounts a tire on the wheel. Use liquid metal and then sand it out. If the rash is not deep simply sand it out.

I sanded the curb rash a little just do get the jagged parts smooth. I'm going to try using metal filler after I read some forums and saw this DIY. I'll post pics when I try it next week.

Im currently in the process of repairing them, and am going to start my write up. As of right now, it is incomplete, as i'm waiting for the filler to dry...

Metal filler I bought. Description says its good for cast metal parts.
