  • How can I repair these wheels?

Hey guys, just picked up a set of HRE 20's in a state of disrepair.

It looks like these were bent and hammered back straight. As a result, two of the lips have dents in them.

What is the best way to clean these up and getting them looking straight again? Should I do:

    Sandblast>Body Filler>Paint/Powdercoat, or
    Sand>Body Filler>Paint/Powdercoat

If I fill these dents in with a body filler or JB Weld, will powdercoat stick to them or will I be limited to using paint?

And if I filled these in with a body filler, I am assuming there is no way I could run a polished lip, eh?

    Some pics...beware, wheel abuse:

It really depends on how bent and dented they are. If you fill them then you can only paint them, you can't powder over filler. One option is to block them out just like you would a regular dent going from aggressive to less aggressive and then polish it out. One good thing about lips is you can do things like block out small dings and sand out curb rash and if done correctly the polish will trick the eye into not noticing it. From what I can tell from the pictures yours are a little beyond that but it's worth a shot, worse comes to worse just buy new lips.

Does anyone know of a source for HRE lips? I couldn't find much of anything on the internet.

Also, how much does a lip goes for on average? Sorry, first set of three piece wheels.

If you cannot find lips: Instead of body filler, have a professional add(weld) more material to the dented areas. Then machine them to proper spec.

Weld if you want to polish. Lab metal filler if you want to PC.

But honestly just re-lip them. They don't look worth the effort.

Relip them man. With the amount of force wheels can hit potholes and such, over time any kind of body filler or jb weld will end up working its way off the surface and just lift on you.

Would this be required if I have curb rash on the lips as well?

Lot of good info in here!

A hammer is not the way to repair a wheel.

I would not touch those lips, id buy new.

Give me a shout if you need lips, I can get them.

Are you asking if you need to add material to clean up the rash?
It depends on how deep the scratches/gouges are. You can machine the lip without adding any filler if the damaged areas are not very deep.

I can give positive feedback for Paul as a seller. I've bought from him and parts arrived quick and well packed. nice parts too.
