  • HELP! SSR Koenig KG-IMP Question

Picked these up and the listing said there were no bends, cracks, or welds. Well the lips were welded to the barrels, one wheel had a bend (possibly from shipping), and one of the wheels had what appears to be "patch panels" welded inside the barrels. I'll be contacting the seller to try and recoup a bit.

Wheels will be getting refreshed. I'm not interested in re-lipping or re-barreling the wheels at this point, so the fact that they are welded together doesn't bother me right now. I was quoted $50 locally to repair the bent lip on the one wheel so that's not a big issue either. But those "patch panels", for lack of a better term, have me puzzled.

This is only on the inside of the barrel of one wheel and you can see them through the window of the center if you know where to look. I looked closely and didn't see any cracks in the aluminum outside where the tire sits. Its almost like someone decided it just needed more material on the inside the barrel for whatever reason. I'm a newbie to the 3-piece wheel game and I wanted to know if this is a sign of previous repair or possibly some sort of quality control measure by SSR 20 years ago or so whenever these were made.

Do I have anything to worry about with this?

    See pics below.

    Said wheel with "patch panels"...

Almost looks like casting marks but I don't think SSR would have cast barrels on a 3pc wheel.

Looks to me like welds that aren't ground down all the way.

i PM'd you back on acurazine...
and these barrels are forged and the faces are cast, looks like whoever had these before cracked the barrel and had it welded up

Thanks SL1K3. I had gotten your message.

The barrels are dirty on the other side opposite the patch panel but no visible flaws. No cracks and no evidence of welding or patches on the other side. That's what is confusing me.

Definitely a crack that was welded, you can see the edge of the barrel is uneven from grinding down the barrels

So can forged barrels get cracks that don't completely penetrate through the barrel? There is nothing on the opposite of this that looks like a crack.

Is this something I should be worried about or how can I check the adequacy of the repair?

                Any tips are much appreciated.

Yes, wheels can get partial cracks in them, and if caught in time it won't crack any further.

I'm guessing that it had a small crack in the wheel that did not go all of the way through, and the small crack was welded, then had a metal patch welded on top of it to prevent the crack from re forming.

p.s. Where did you find these wheels? I haven't seen a set of koenigs for a loooooong time.

Thanks man. Finally took these to a repair shop today to get a very minor bend fix and the guy said basically the same thing. :thumbs up:

Found these on eBay from a seller in Malaysia. Super good dude and he credited some back for this. Check out "infield_solutions" on there. He's got a gold set of these right now.
