  • What is this substance and how do I remove it...

My brother bought a set of SSR Comp-c's the other day and they arrived today and so like any wheel whore I needed to go over to look at them. The previous owner had them on an M3 with stoptech brakes and used them as winter wheels. So the raw aluminum has a little bit of pitting on it but it cleans up pretty well with minimal polishing as far as we have seen. However there is some sort of black substance on the front wheels only that is fairly hard to remove. Any ideas of what it is or how to remove it would be appreciated.

Metal polish seems to clean it up somewhat well just extremely slowly, bug & tar remover works about as effectively or ineffectively. Acetone and glass cleaner both seem fairly useless...

My dad also came out of the house when we were messing with them and said he remembered the M-parallels he had on his old BMW had something like this on them as well...

Oh and if you were interested in seeing the wheels

lets just say it is another stanced goat in the works

It looks like just baked on break dust and dirt. Have you tried something like brake cleaner on it yet?

I did not see any brake cleaner on the shelf at my parents house but I am pretty sure I left some there after I pulled my style 5's apart. I will try that tomorrow. One of my buddies suggested a mr. clean magic eraser, It worked pretty well for cleaning up my style 5's so I will try that as well.

I know what brake dust looks like and honestly have never seen it look like this... my style 5's barrels weren't even this bad when I got them and they hadn't been clean since 1998 when they were made lol

The magic eraser worked semi well and was slightly time consuming but it worked. I ended up just using 1500 grit wet sand paper to clean them up.
