DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. I take no responsibility for what you do to your own wheels. This can seriously harm people around you, if a wheel fails.
So back story. I've always been a fan of the styling 29's centers, one of those features that drew me in, is that they only have 20bolts to hold them together, and how those bolt holes end at each spoke, awesome detail in my opinion. tho I never liked the small lip, or the shape of it. I had been thinking about how to convert them for a long time, tho lack of money put a stopper to it. I could not afford new barrels and lips. But then i saw a build thread on here, can't remember the name. But this chap in England converted his set too three piece, and reused the old barrels.
So i thought why not give it a shot, the plan here is to get them fitted on an E28. The main thing is that they will not clear the front struts without spacers. And we all know what is added in spacers is lost in lip size. So I'll have to do something about that as well.
So the too do list is.
-Cut of old lips.
-Reuse barrels, But I'll have to cut them up, to get them narrower.
-Order four new lips from Germany.
-Polish the Hexagon cap.
-Get new BBS emblems, (Getting them shipped from Paul, the man behind Ehrlich wheelworks).
-Glass blast them.
-Paint them, unsure of color at the moment, any input is welcome. They will go on an Burgundy red E28.
I picked the wheels up in Denmark, had them Shipped to me. Here is a picture of them when i got them.
So Lathe-time, the way i set them up was by using a 20mm spacer. First i centered the spacer in the Lathe.
Then I bolted up the wheel.
Started cutting, the first wheel.
Then for the second wheel, i used "don't know what you guys call it, but we call it a (stingari), guess that is a Stinger" it work out much faster.
Success kid, lip is off. After i had them cut of, i went over the surface with the regular cutter.
A picture of them disassembled, two waiting patiently for there turn to get the lips off.
Then i haaaaaaaad to do the obligatory Barrel + Barrel shot. The lips that i will order are gonna be around 3.5 or 3.75" lips all around.
And a few of them mounted to the front of the car. Progress will not be so fast, Since I work over in the oil business in Norway and am gone four weeks, then I'm home for four weeks.
Crazy amount of poke, the lips that i will use will be half the size of these.
And with the centercap mounted.
I'll post more as progress goes, hope you guys enjoy.
