I got the same idea with my throwing stars, only had 17" lips and barrels lying around tho, and no access to a lathe.
If i had the tooling that i have now, i would convert them to three piece.

i have a set laying around, may contact one of the guys a spintech and see how much it would cost to have it done. Saw a set of 18' conversion lips + barrels on ebay for around $1200 IIRC.
