  • Can I use brake parts cleaner for cleaning wheels

    Hey folks,

I have a set of CCW LM5s, which I admit to have neglected the upkeep on. After 2 full seasons of road racing and AutoX, the front wheels have a lot of brake dust and dirt caked up on the inner barrels.

The barrels are polished and the centers are hard anodized. No paint or clear coat.

I tried cleaning the barrels with Scotch Brite green pad. It works but man does it take forever to get it down to clean metal..

I was wondering if brake parts cleaner will be able to dissolve this without damaging the wheels?

    Comments, suggestions, ideas?

I have Sonax. I've been using it for 2 years. It works well when you don't have things too much caked up. It did nothing for the inner barrels.

Sonax and a stiff brush should remove everything from the barrels... If they're the wheels in your signature it's not a huge deal if they're not perfectly clean - the faces take up so little space you won't be able to see the barrels because they're hidden well behind the lip/rotor.

          You can try this stuff...

I think you can order this on amazon.
Don't let soak it to long.
Not my pics, but you get the point...

brakecleaner is overkill and may mess up your paint or plastic or whatever. That stuff kills things so

Thanks for the advise. I'll try again.

I need to get the inside barrels very clean because I am changing tires soon and they need to be balanced. You can't stick any wheel weights on a dirty barrel because it will fall off immediately.

Yes, its the wheels in my signature.

Link? I can't find it in amazon by typing Aluminium Teufel which is what I see on the label.
