  • Baller Ronal SX rebuild

As the title states, I started my first wheel rebuild a few weeks on a set of Ronal SX's. I'll get to the pictures shortly, but first some background:

I found this set for sale on Bf.c at the end of April but they were in LA, a long way from Eastern PA and the buyer was not willing to ship. I was pretty butthurt at first but I knew I had to have these wheels. I devised a bulletproof plan to ask random strangers in the Los Angeles area via bimmerforums if anybody would be willing to pick them up and ship them to me. A friendly man name Jonathan replied to my thread within a few hours and we were off and running. A few days of extremely hectic third party planning between the seller and the shipper go by and the plan is set. Paypal over the money and the shipper picks the wheels up the next day and has them shipped within a few weeks. With all that out of the way, lets get to the good stuff.

    Info:
Wheels are 17x8 and 9 with square offsets of +42. The wheels themselves are by no means common but I have yet to find another set in those specs. They arrived in decent shape, but in desperate need of a refinish.

    Plans:
I'll be spray painting the centers myself in a color called lagoon and I'll be adding a fairly heavy silver glitter then a gloss topcoat. The current rears (9j et42) will be moved to the front and run with a 25mm spacer to achieve a final offset of +17. The lips will be getting a high mirror hand polish. As for the current fronts (8j et42) they'll be getting brand new custom made 3.5" lips and moved to the rear giving me 10j et17 out back

Got the new burnout tires off and got to work

First step was to get everything cleaned up, the hardware were first up with a 36 hour vinegar bath.

Surprisingly all I needed to get the barrels back to a basically like-new state was a Brillo pad and some warm soap water

    Got the rear lips stripped

Cleaned stripped and put together to appreciate some of the work

Primed face and stripped lip next to an untouched wheel. 3 coats of primer the sanded with 320 grit

Layed down a basecoat on the faces. 3 coats

A generous pass with the flake and about 5 coats of gloss, cured for a few days then I hit with a rubbing compound

    A finished front

Completed next to un-touched. I only did the fronts so far because I have to send the faces off to the lip provider for measurements and I don't want the finish to possibly get damaged in shipping or during measurements. I also apologize for all the shitty iPhone 4 pictures. the color is MUCH more light blue/green in person than the blue or baby blue it looks in the pictures. professional photos to come.

      Very nice job so far.

I saw those FS on CL for quite a while, I believe in Pico Rivera IIRC.

BTW I am in LA and have bought and shipped wheels for multiple people, 3-4 off stanceworks and some off BF.C as well. If you ever need something just LMK.

I'll be checking back in to see when they are finished.

Looks good. Did the vinegar take the clear off of the bolts? did you clear coat them again??

Your memory serves my friend, thanks for the love guys. I should be ordering the lips sometime around the end of the month. The bolts didn't have a clear on them I dont believe, but it stripped the nuts and now they have some surface rust. I plan to put a coat of anti-seize on before final assembly.

Did a quick test fit yesterday because bored. Pretty happy with how they sit. Might get a few MM shaved off the spacers

Or you can just get the rust off the nuts, dry them, primer them. let that dry for about an hr.. then spray paint the back side. let that dry for a day, spray the front and bake that in the oven at 200 degrees for like an hr. just did that about a week ago. seems to be holding fine. worked with a dollar paint from walmart..

                  rims look nice btw.

                  hi

Awesome thanks for the tip man I might just try that. How bad does the baking paint smell up the house?

lol. i actually put the nuts on a piece of wood.then in the oven, the wood didnt burn but did smell a lil bit. haha. paint didnt.
bet if you put them on a piece of foil or metal sheet, you wont even notice.

some people buy a toaster oven from the 2nd hand store, but i hardly use the regular oven, so

                          hi
