  • BBS RM disassembly with tires still installed?

I'm looking to disassemble my RM's and am wondering if I can do so without paying a tire shop to remove the tires for me first. They already have 2" and 2.5" stainless lips so they are 15x8 and 15x8.5 with a slight stretch on the tires.

I was thinking if I let all the air out of the tire, unscrewed all the bolts and pulled hard enough on the lip then in theory, it should pop right off and the tire can just be lifted off at that point. Would this work? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You're going to have a hard time cutting through the silicone like that.

honestly, for the $30 or whatever it would be for the tire shop to take the tires off.... why struggle?

Also, as said, good luck with the silicone.

I had a feeling they would be hard to separate, I just wanted to make sure. I'll just take them to a tire shop

Go to the shop or You will make a mess. If You're cheapskate don't do cars. It ends up more expensive in the end.

Even if you could get the lip off which I seriously doubt, you'll never be able to have enough room to seal them correctly

First off, I'm not a cheapskate. I just spent over $4k just on wheels and suspension for my 2002 and have bought quality products throughout my entire restoration. It was simply an idea that seemed to make sense. I only would've used this method to disassemble the wheels, there's no way that would work to put them back together. Honestly, my biggest fear and concerning factor is of the tire shop scratching the stainless lips upon removing the tires, considering they're worth about $900 alone, and I will be selling them once they're off so I didn't want to risk it.

With that said, I appreciate whoever put in useful advice, so thank you for that.

A lot of my lurking on the forum included reading ChubbyChowders build thread and this man^^^^^ is no cheapskate. I dont see why your idea wouldnt work. Would only be time consuming and if you did scatch the lip you could only get mad at yourself lol. Do what youve got to do bro, and judging by your work and attention to detail, Im sure you could get it done.

Cheapskate or not it still won't work . I feel your pain I cringed when I brought my th lines to get mounted and again when they got dismounted. if you don't have complete faith in your tire shop then I'd find a better one.

The thing is, I don't exactly have a specific tire shop which I rely on. I guess I'll just call around and see which ones are confident in keeping my lips safe during the dismounting. Thanks for your input though.

Only asshole here is You for calling someone an asshole. I'm speaking from my personal experience as I did cars without money and it ended up more expensive in the end like I said.

About the tire shop ruining wheels I completely understand You. I've had a hard time finding the right guy for the job that's more careful around the wheels than myself.

Ignoring how difficult it will be to break the silicone bead, it is going to be next to impossible to debead the tire from the bead on the lip without proper tools, and even with the proper hand tools you will be much more likely to damage the lip/barrel than a shop. I had the same idea previously, it sucks, go to a tire shop haha.

I wanted to try this but a local tyre shop to me strips em off for free. Would be interested to know if you manage it.
