Opinion on Style 5s Redrill

Hey Guys,

So a friend of my mine bought a set of style 5s that we're refinishing for his TC. Before we took the wheels apart he drove all the way to Tampa (about an hour and a half from Orlando where we live) to get them redrilled at a shop that was highly recommended to him.When he got the wheels back they looked like this:

In your guys' opinion, is the way the drilled into the hub safe? The car wont be doing any racing of any sort, but will be daily driven.

I'm not an expert but that does not look safe at all.

Iirc it's safe because the stress is on the lug holes where the inserts are pressed in, not on the hub bore. Someone else with more knowledge can probably be of more help.

Looks super sketchy. Lug holes not filled, they cut into the hub centre. There's hardly any metal left in the hub. Only thing that looks good is that they added the rings. I wouldn't ride on those.

Yeah I found it pretty skecthy too which is why i wanted some opinions. The rings are pressed in and I think it helps but its definitely not something I would call safe.

That is what the standard CB looks like.

My friend redrilled some for his Bora, they were close like that.

He went for a smaller hole though, with a smaller wheel nut. The shop who did that assured him they would be safe to drive on, as said above, the stresses don't press on to that area.

Saying that, it is close. Could you not weld in some kind of metal spigot ring?

Theres a ring inside of the redrilled holes and they fit fine when we test fitted them on the car. Has your friend had any issues?

Whoever redrilled those wheels does not know what they are doing. If you look at the wheel on the blue jetta you can see the new bolt patter was drilled offset in rotation as well as diameter to the old pattern where there is a lot more material for machining.

No way are those at all safe. Not only did they choose an idiotic place to machine the new bolt pattern they ruined the hub bore in the process. You can see on the blue car they drilled a small diameter hole and used tuner lugs so that they could avoid affecting the hub bore.
