  • DIY rim painting

Hey guys, so i figured i would make a bit of a "tutorial" on the process i'm using to re-do my 16x8.5 salad shooter wheels that reside on my Jaguar XJ-6. First, we'll start off with some shots of the car, on the wheels as they sit now.

I chose to jack my car up in the street to remove and replace my wheels. A simple 3 ton jack and the factory supplied tire tool got the lugs off in no time flat.

    Jacked up!

Yuck, rust! Maybe i'll make a thread for the bondo work i do. Maybe not.

So assuming you guys know how to jack up your car and remove the wheels, then replace them with your stock wheels, here's where it starts to get interesting.

This one shot really shows the set as a whole. They used to be red, and the previous owner did his best to remove all of it, but failed to do so in certain areas.

Before you start spraying anything, you'll want to clean your wheels thoroughly. I used ArmorAll wheel cleaner and soapy water, with a microfiber rag to dry them. Make sure to get in all the little slots to remove build up. I used a flexible wheel brush for that, which i found at wal-mart.

Next, you'll need a pack of index cards, which i found around the house. Slip these in between your lips and tires to make sure you keep your tires from being stained in any way. Also, tape off your valve stems.

For multiple reasons, I've decided to lay down a few base coats of black plasti-dip before using my wheel paint. This ensures a clean adhesion, and it also allows you to remove the work you've done if you don't like it in the future. This is after the 1st coat.

After allowing the first coat to dry for a while (about an hour) I applied a second coat of black plasti-dip.

After the second coat, i came home and sprayed a third and final coat of black plasti-dip, which is currently drying overnight as I write this. My progress will be recorded in here as i make it. Next step is a few coats of gunmetal dupli-color wheel paint, and a coat or two of dupli-color clear wheel spray. Stay tuned and thanks for reading!

The lighting makes it look like I sprayed a lot, which I sort of did, but once it bubbled down it's looking pretty good. When I went out a day later to spray the 3rd coat, the finish of the first 2 was pretty good.
        lets see the outcome

Me neither lol. It's kind of a long process, but I have a feeling the actual paint will go faster.

I went out and checked on these jawns this afternoon and the plastidip separated around the lip of the wheels and I'm close to just burning my house down and running away forever

But I'm gonna try and get some money together for a few more cans and try again

I think you layered it on too thick to start with, also with plastidip you don't have to use the index cards as the part you get on the tire will just peel off.

In all of the "DipYourCar" videos from them they never mask off the tires.

Here's the video I was speaking of: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlyB3FbYRRs"]PlastiDip Rims - Without Taking Wheels off the Car - DipYourCar.com How To - YouTube[/ame]

What the hell am I reading

              You're using plastidip as primer?

This isn't going to end well...

I had originally seen it on a 350z forum I think. He dipped all of his wheels with a few coats, and then painted them like I plan on doing. Of course his came out great and mine are starting to take a turn for the worse

Salad shooters tend to bubble after too many coats or too thick of coats so be careful they can be a pita to paint should of just polished them...

Did I miss the part where your wheels get prepared? No sanding/ rubbing them back? From what I've learnt, paint wont stick to a smooth surface, such as the previous layer of paint.
But, I've never had experience with 'plasti-paint', just two-pack

To go along with this theme, I'm going to make a welding DIY tomorrow.

I've never welded before in my life.

Yeah they bubbled up a bit upon shooting them. I kind of want to polish them. I'm really indecisive when it comes to this, mainly because there's a million things you can do to these wheels.

I guess these are the mistakes you can afford to make when you're young!

I've done this a few times prior, but I don't think any of those sets of wheels were aluminum like these are. Every other time I've done this, it came out great and they've lasted a while (read: until they get curbed) haha.
